Weapons you wished you'd see sometimes.

What of the bec-de-corbin? Do the rules accurately reflect what a bad-ass you can be with such a weapon? I refer to the first fight scene between Lancerlot and Arthur in Excalibur.

Weapons you wished you'd see sometimes.

May I say "excellent" on both points. A quick an easy way to account for rapiers and using the spear for one of the prime reasons humans used them for for millenia. To me, millenia of human conflict is the best play test of what's a superior weapon and what is not. There's good reasons many...

    Are xp/levels/advancement necessary?

Another way is to set one adventure per season and/or make things players want to do between adventures, e.g., make scrolls, have items made, take a lot longer; especially at low leels where they may not have the cash to expedite things. But this can seriously mess with certain adventure ideas...

What makes a Monty Haul Game?

Amen to that brother. As a DM you can also adjust on the fly. Say you throw an encounter at them which turns out much more difficult than you expected (assuming players not being stupid) there can always be that secret compartment with some treasure stashed in it.

    Bad DM'ing night

Yeah, don't criticize yourself. You we're a good DM in my book. The execution took a long time, it seems you used some objective rules instead of DM fiat to determine whether he would make it through the night or not, and you played the evil orcs just as evil orcs would act. The bad aspect of...

If you were a Beholder.........what would you ask of my players?

That's what I'd recommend. Anything that weakens these humanoids. If I was a beholder I'd also try to ambush the party on their way back while they are weakened. Maybe I'd even send a wanring to my "enemy" so he could prepare an ambush. Maybe there is no enemy it just leads to a deadly place...

Deck of Many Things: Your experiences and advice?

Love the Deck, as player and GM, but only have experience with the 1e version. It can certainly destroy a campaign if you do not have some wishes handy. I don't have the info in front of me but IIRC even the worse cards could be undone by a wish. We found it very addictive, came across it 3...

    Alignment myths?

    (1) That alignment solves more problems as a game mechanic than it causes. (2) Alignment is useless to have in a game. That is, alignment threads get people to talk about the age old (or at least 5,000 year old) philosophical questions about what is good and what is evil. Is it the act, is...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Traveller (1977) and IIRC Pendragon (also 1985) had social standing systems. Traveller having it as a numerical stat and although a sci-fi rpg it might give you some ideas how to use it to have an in-game effect. IIRC Pendragon had the effects nicely laid out for an early medieval environment.

    Crit charts in D&D?

I use an increased damage system and a very, very simplified hit location system for critical hits but nothing fancy with colorful descriptions of decapitations and such.

Have You Ever Given 0 XP, or Taken XP Away?

Never had a situation that called for it, and doubt I will.

More the merrier? I don't think so.

I think part of it is to separate number of player's from number of PCs. I like 3-4 players each having 2 PCs, so 6-8 PCs in a party with maybe 1-3 followers. It's what I grew up with. These days I like small numbers because we play only if everyone can show up. With family and career...

    Buying D&D

If $30 million is accurate, and I have no idea if it is, it may include the assumption of debt that TSR may have wracked up before folding. Annual Reports are where the information will lie if WotC was public when they bought TSR.

    Whats a player to do?

I wouldn't be blunt about all the things you mentioned. Pick one you'd like to change and don't touch the others. In a delicate negotiation such as this, think of the thing you really want and be prepared to give on the others or even praise them. If you are more interested in not having to...

GMs: Do you enforce/encourage a certain style of play?

Probably 1.5, pretty free form; but no evil PCs and no intra-party ackstabbing unless the two players involved are both into it. But neither has come up in decades, it heroic swords & socercy fantasy for us. I give xp rewads for "role playing," taking on extra danger (e.g. taking point) etc...

How common were wishes in AD&D1?

As spells, never encountered them. When my MU got to the level he could cast 9th level spells he was retired. As items or boons, it was fairly common to have 1 with the party. Our general rule was if you didn't "tempt fate" you were pretty safe from having the wish twisted. If you got very...

    Early clerics and the gods

If you are talking about game material based gods, then we used Gods, Demi-gods, and Heros. But in me experience, DMs had their own pantheons, often inspired by historical pantheons.

    Help me save my game

Good stuff, I agree 100%. I tend to make rolls for noticing things secretly (so as not to tip players off) but throwing in a roll is a great way to maintian attention.
