Pre-designed world Vs Starting from scratch

Started from scratch because when I started you had to unless you consieder City State of the Invincible Overlorad a setting. :) That said, I'd start from scrath again and love home brew settings. In the beginning it was half the fun to share your world maps and ideas with friends. I'd...

What Gaming Stuff Are You Getting/Giving For Christmas?

Mostly unique, or fairly unique, fast and fun card games like Fluxx, and board games like the pyramid building game Giza from http://www.curiocityonline.com/home.php which has carried some interesting games that are always changing. Gave a friend who has everything the Cosmic Costers game, only...

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

QFT especially the last paragraph. The number of classes put forth in D&D rivals the number of skills in some skill based systems.

    What to do now?

I would say to give games a rest for a time. It sounds like they were not providing the enjoyment they used to. I took a break, sortof, for several years with children and career taking precedence. Came back to things with a fresh mind. Over the years not actively running a game I worked...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

 Not at all. Just some of the conceptions people have about jurisdiction on the internet do not seem to be the product of a reasoned opinion of experienced counsel. Fair enough. I've gone a little beyond my original point, which is really be careful, and if you feel secure, feel...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Fair enough, also saw you have looked at the OGL terms regarding governing law, etc. Sorry about the confusion on Mythmere, it makes sense now, sometimes he seems like he is going over the legal picture, sometimes not. I guess he is just cahnneling your counsels advice, heck for all I know...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Does the OSRIC product land in the US and do you purposely avail yourself of a channel of commerce that lands the product in the US? Is your argument that the situs of any actionable act is only the UK? I'm also pretty sure the US and UK are both signatories to international treaties on the...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

I think not being the lawyer is key. Unless mythmere is a lawyer with experience in this area I'll reserve judgment. I can say from personal experience that companies can wait and do what you describe in your Pepsi example, at least to the extent I understand your example. I think we need to...

    Alignment System

So true (no pun intended). Just because someone believes something doesn't make it true. For example, there is much evidence on mistaken perceptions, such as mistaken witness identification. Can a person be trained or maybe through a magic spell "Tell Lie" beat the detect lie spell. For...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

 How long has OSRIC been around? I seriously doubt the statute of limitations has run if OSRIC is in violation of WoTC IP, OGL, etc. Assuming for the sake of conjecture WoTC is gunning for OSRIC, they may be biding time gathering evidence, waiting to see if it's worth the time and...

D&D Economics - Out of the Dungeon

One was a magical component supply shop, supplied by the party who was always bring back parts of slaim magical beasts. Another was a player who opened a bank, making money off of loans and owning a security interest in a lrage part of the barony.

    What's your favorite spell system?

Of commercial systems Dragonquest and The Fantasy Trip are the approaches I like best. Similar to Dragonquest, in TFT spells cost Strength (basically fatigue). The basic components I like in a system are success based on skill in a school, more schools less skill in each. A simplified spell...

    Is D&D a heroic game?

Agreed, I think The gneech said it well in post #25 By contemporary standards Volsungs, Jason, Lancelot, etc. did some very immoral deeds. However, the "hero" typically felt great guilt over acts that were immoral in his own time. Lancelot is probably the example we can understand the best...

Mike Mearl's on simplifying skills in D&D

Suprised not to see it....add Traveller the original skill based RPG IIRC, I'd also add the Universal Game Mechanic (UGM).

    What's the "Perfect" medieval setting?

Quick reply tp post # 40, clearly :) The stranger has found a possessed weapon. He originally grabbed it with his left hand and tried to resist its will, he lost and was punished for hi imputance (the whole scorched, broken body thing). The sword led him back to the land of his, his father's...

    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

More of a Doh! moment than true stupidity. Party of six low level adventurers (level 2-3) need to cross a room filled with spear bearing skeletons (20 total). IMC having the weapon makes them much more dangerous. The party correctly surmizes they are not your average skeletons from their...

    Spell Guidelines

If you are going to go with spell points, I'd suggest a mechanic that if you fail on casting the spell you take some damage related to how much power you put into it. You may also want to put a cap on how many spell points one can use to power a low level spell.

What's the big deal with point buy?

My experience with point buy as well. The point buy I use will gaurantee you a slightly above average character but no 17's or 18's unless you really sacrifice somewhere else. It's an option, you can point buy or roll. That said, everyone wants to roll and I've found rolling usually gives...

I can't help but wonder--how many AD&D 1e players ARE there out there?

I think that sums it up nicely. What do you mean by 1e AD&D? Some say AD&D is meant to be played by-the-book (or at least pretty much). You changed the rules too much and it's not AD&D. Most AD&D I've seen or played since 1979 has had many house-rules. Most gap fillers but then one person's...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Pramas, thanks for the reply, thanks also to WayneLigon too I'll have to check that blog. I was hoping you'd say there was gold in them thar' hills. :) I think I'll keep my day job. But more power to you all that stick with to keep RPGs alive.
