How many adventures/modules do you normally run in the same campaign at the same time

All the modules I have (commercial and homebrew) are available at any time for players to go through, as well as just making the adventure as we go through exploration, achieving player goals (e.g., I'm looking for x), etc. So a couple of dozen available at any time.

DM as Facilitator or as Adversary?

Well said. Using the OP choices I'd have to say facilitator...of adventure. There is certainly an adversarial component in that I run the enemies and they pull no punches (no fudged dice rolls for example). However, I also run the PCs friends, support structure, those who don't give a hoot...

    Creating a "module" based campaign

I like to string together the follwoing where all commercial modules are modified in monsters, treasure and setting to fit the campaign., e.g., replacing the Drow with another power: JG's Caverns of Thracia -to- (homebrew) Caverns of the Alchemi -to- G1 -to- (homebrew) Tower of Spiders -to- G2...

How many humanoid species are cross-breedable in your campaign?

humans can breed with elves producing sterile offspring; humans can breed with orcs producing sterile offspring; it is rumored elves can breed with orcs producing sterile offspring. That's it, no other "half breeds." Explaination is simple, genetics, different species cannot breed, almost the...

Attack of Opportunity -- does it deserve to survive to v.4?

Kept. They are as old as wargaming itself. The concept is often called by other names such as zone of control.

OSRIC: something for the old schoolers

Current market? Don't think they have one, but the two other concerns: fragmentation the market and future re-releases don't rely on a current market to raise concerns at WotC. By fragment the market I mean that if there is only one choice of a commercialy supported D&D rule set then WotC...

OSRIC: something for the old schoolers

 They may fear you will fragment their market or reduce their market for their own 1e AD&D products or re-releases. They may fear this is treading to close in product identity to their 1e AD&D and hence may need to police their 1e AD&D mark by asking you to cease and desist. They...

Dungeon layout, map flow and old school game design

Should have read the whole thread first. :( Can you be convinced to try otherwise?

Dungeon layout, map flow and old school game design

Melan, excellent post. Have you done any other dungeons or take requests perhaps? I would love to see The Caverns of Thracia analyzed what with the mulitiude of secret doors and sub-levels.

What does XP mean to you?

I pretty much agree on your approach. I don't like to award a fixed amount per adventure (rather letting the PCs actions determine the amount the gain) but I also don't want xp=killing. I award xp for "overcoming" an encounter, which includes many things besides combat. For example, if the...

A question about Magic and Law enforcement interacting

Good points. One way is to have different casters do this independently at different times. First to have the caster's serve as a check against each other, second to better foil defenses. If magical truth finding is critical, a kingdom might have a special room set up to foil...

Feeding/watering mounts and beasts of burden (or a 12,000 lb lizard?)

I must rsepctfully disagree on the water intake both from personal experience and every thing I've read in the field. The 1 gallon a day number is handy and has floated around for quite some time. it's a great guideline for stockpiling since we use water for som many things but for what you...

Feeding/watering mounts and beasts of burden (or a 12,000 lb lizard?)

Arravis, some numbers. 1 Animal Unit (AU) requires 354 kg dry feed per month, or 26 lbs per day; Reptiles require about one tenth the amount of food as a mammal; I have one data point, for dogs, that a carnivore requires about twice as much food as a herbivore (that is about 54 lbs per day for...

    How many times...?

Talk to some people in law enforcement. I think you'll find the use of deadly force is very, very restricted. Having your authority flaunted, being covered in garbage or pelted with rocks or bottles, even being threatened with words like "I'm going to kill you" doesn't rise to the level of...

Feeding/watering mounts and beasts of burden (or a 12,000 lb lizard?)

Those numbers are interesting. I'll try to find my own sources and forward those so you can make your own decison. I find the need for a gallon of water too high and a pound of food too low for non-desert environments. But it seesm the food requirement is qualified with "avoiding starvation"...

The importance of the seasons in your adventures/campaigns?

They play an important role as wars, orc raids, giant white spiders emerging from the great wood, etc. all occur at different seasons. I try to have them set a flavor and have a tactical effect, if any, they tended to have hsitorically. Dare I say it, hopefully it gives a feeling of a living...

At what level do you start your campaigns?

I voted 1st but I'm not adverse to other starting points. I also bring new PCs into a campaign at level slightly below party level.

Feeding/watering mounts and beasts of burden (or a 12,000 lb lizard?)

Not a bad approach. But your humans must be on the super model thin side. :) An average for humans is about 2000 calories per day, smaller size, and inactivity can lower to 1,500. Larger size and activity can raise to 3,000 calories per day. A kg of grain contains about 2,000 calories. So...

Feeding/watering mounts and beasts of burden (or a 12,000 lb lizard?)

Arravis, I wish I had the numbers here at work but you might be able to cobble an answer together from the internet. The dietary needs of almost all mammals can be found from the concept of the Animal Unit (AU), as you might imagine farmers have this stuff down pat. For a herbivore 1 AU =...
