In Addition To RPGs, Do You Play Wargames (Including Tactical Miniatures Games)?

Yes, but rarely. The last was probably HeroClix (great superhero bash 'em up fun). Started with wargames as well: Panzerblitz IIRC was my gateway game. Would like to play some Squad Leader, Titan or Battlefleet Mars if I could find some takers.

    Artificially increasing base speed

I think covering 40 miles is certainly doable for those in extraordinary shape, there are far shorter times posted here: http://americasroof.com/?p=129 and this is up a mountain.

Why are D&D discussions so angry?

Working my way through some coffee and this thread. After my last post, with attention to the fact that tone does not carry over the internet, I want to agree with what Nyaricus said about ENWorld being by and large a place where you can have discussions about "fixing" D&D without fear of...

Why are D&D discussions so angry?

Certainly have seen it here and don't think you are off base. But have seen it far, far worse and far more often on other D&D forums, where sometimes even the moderators join in. Excuse the language, but "thread crapping" I think it is called. My own limited observation is the "angry...

    D&D Political Systems

Two things I think, (1) Personal charisma can sway millions and build a following of loyal retainers that make sure your orders are carried out, really it's about who can get the army to follow them for whatever reason (and historically a popular general often is the one); and (2) Class based...

How to: Cthulhu in the 20's.

Tons of good ideas here, and will be using most. :) I'm trying to set-up and 1890's campaign, then we'll move to 1920's etc. One thing I've been doing is collecting newspaper headlines from the era. I'd like to present the players with a major headline, and maybe a little headline a week...

Good Looking Map? Homebrew tips needed. (My World)

I think you have a good beginning here. The scale you mention is key, each landmass will have probably at most two mountainous regions and a few major rivers. Given the scale are these a few small continents in a vast ocean? The set up looks great for many sea based adventures. Currents and...

    my first DM session

I don't think I could say it better myself. Been DMing/GMing for neigh 28 years, the rules are for you to use and aid you in consistently adjudicating the same situations the same way. But they are not a straightjacket, this is a fantasy adventure game here not chess. Pacing, interesting...

So how long have YOU been playing D&D?

First game in 1977, "white box" + supplements with best friend's older college age brother, we quickly moved to 1e AD&D as the books came out. I say "white box" because that's what I bought and the DM's books looked the same. IIRC we had to hide Eldritch Wizardry from our parents, the cover...

    D&D needs improvement

Well as this thread has moved on from the OP ;). I don't find the FBI data as compelling, as it depends on how you view the "death spiral." In addition: the FBI data focuses more on someone still fighting, it doesn''t give detail on reduced effectiveness except in the grosses sense, that is a...

    I need help...

Well in my younger days (circa 1979 or so) it was pretty much once or more a week with a long session on the weekend, two 12 hour stretches were not uncommon. A more realistic schedule is once a week for 4-6 hours. With career and children we are lucky if we can keep to a bimonthly schedule...

    Grappling with Six Saving Throws

I like it. It has a certain elegence about it. The ray save based on INT makes perfect sense to me, especially for spell casters. Knowing the ways of magic they are better able to judge when the spell will be complete and how such things are "aimed."

    The Death Spiral

Levitator, like what you describe regarding healing potions and fatigue. We're also running a low magic item availability camoaign (only scrolls and potions can be bought). Not to get too far off topic but we also use something similar for fatigue, basically a check to see if you increase in...

What did we do before feats, skills, and prestige classes?

Now having made my way through the thread.... So true, while my personal experience was that house ruling was common if the late 70s, I've discovered in my old age sites where that is consider very wrong to do. :( I wouldn't call 3e+ more streamlined. 1e was bascially rules for level...

What did we do before feats, skills, and prestige classes?

Way back to the original posts...what did we do in 1978-1979? One approach was to add modifiers to distinguish say between the Mongol Warrior Fighter (+1 to bow and no penalty to fire from horseback say) and the Roman Legionaire (+1 to short sword, seige engineering), but the Romans really...

    Forms of Government

Here's something I worked up long ago on gvoernment types for a sci-fi game. THe first column is the basis of authority, that is how leaders are chosen. Three columns are who this authority is vest in an individual, a group or "everyone" that qualifies for the basis. THe names may not be...

What if your players had an innate knowledge of your setting?

I think it is a great idea to use real world geography and maps. Players will have an instant feel for the landscape and distances. I personally wouldn't duplicate the current political boundries. Some places just make great locations for a city so London for example could be maintained but...
