Alignment - is it any good?

I generally have found that it is more trouble than it is worth. As long as acts determine alignment, and not alignment determining your actions I'm fine with it. I've see too much CE, CN alignments taken as just an excuse to be an a** to others.

    D&D 4E Palladium's philosophy for D&D 4e? Pros and cons

I recall picking up the OD&D books in late '76 and Traveller later. Compared to OD&D, Traveller was a highly complete and easy to use game. I still recall trying to find Chainmail, how in the world can you sell a game without the combat rules. Anyway, I still loved it. It came out at the...

"low" magic campaign using D&D rules

I think you might need to tweak the rules a bit or add some further rules but still get all the other things you want. My proposal. (1) Make it harder to become a spell caster. Not for PCs but in the apprenticeship phase. You may want to require a minimum IN or WS. If you don't want to do...

    weapon ranges and carrying capacity

Yes but not religous about it, only tracking major things and using lots of common sense. I use them more to prevent abuse and factor in armor weight. Once a base calculation is done it is not redone unless someone tries to carry lots of big things or lots of gold.

    weapon ranges and carrying capacity

Those look really good for effective ranges. They match pretty well the research I've done over the years from books, world records, competitions, etc. The numbers for arrows look like those for an armor peircing arrow. One thing to watch out for in the data is what arrow is tested, it makes...

Demonweb maps - now featuring Scott Rouse question

$40 for squares. $60 for offset squares. I'd pay a good fraction of that ($20-$30) for pdfs if the pdfs were designed so that when printed you could fit them all together. I'd also pay that for a map without any grid but with some transparency on it. The reason, I've taken to prinitng out...

How long is the typical tabletop session?

Same here. Now days 4-5 hours (Sat. 7pm-11pm+). And it is major scheduling feet to get all our schedules to line up. I'd say we have 6 hours of fun in 4 hours of gaming, it's pretty efficient and non-stop. Edit: I also prep and take care via e-mail as many tasks as possible before the next...

    What is a good non-d20 sci-fi RPG?

Check out this link http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=002083;p=1#000001 you can get Star Frontier and Traveller info in one stop. The site also has several threads (you may need to search) about making BSG out of Traveller. One note, there was several...

    How to un-cheese D&D?

I think your method ironregime looks very good as a systematic approach. The only others I can think of is: -substitute consumable magic items (scrolls, potions) for permanent ones (rings, wands); -consider where substituting a alchemy/mundane based item for a potion, etc. would work.

    3.5 Without Minis?

I'll second Odhanan. Even before D&D AoO, the idea of zones of control and free attacks or open attacks have been around. It works just fine without minis as long as everyone is reasonable as described above. We generally stay away from the minis as most encounters take place in situations...

    I'm burning out, again....

I think that is the very best idea for four reasons. First, the person DMing will really have to learn (or learn more of the rules). Second, you can no play and show them all the tactical and cool stuff you can do. Once you trounce the new-DMs first few scenarios the other players may take...

Whats going on in your game?

We’ve basically just finished off the Caverns of Tharcia (circa 1979 version) with a large battle SPOILERS: with the Minotaur King, his pyrohydra, manticores, harpies and goblinoid hordes (roughly 80 left) (dog brothers and gnolls were converted to hobgoblins and bugbears). The party was aided...

    Seriously considering dropping the hobby

Maybe it is because the outcome of any disucssion on what or what is not good or bad in gaming has no consequences. The world doesn't care about edition wars, and they don't lead to actual war. Religion, politics, those can lead to actual wars and bloodshed, so I think people have a greater...

    What did TSR do wrong?

Wow. Almost exactly the opposite for me, but I take a commuter train so the laptop is very easy to use, easier than magazines for me. My wireless goes to the backyard, so I don't mind. I recall I used to lug Dragon's to the gaming table then found I only needed a page or two, so I'd type up...

Will the Magic System be shown the door?

I think your taking one implementation of a "spell point" concept and saying because it didn't work it can't work. Simply not the case, at least with what we've been using for the last 13 years. If the system (1) had a chance of failure that increases as you put more points into it (and said...

    "Progress" in your setting

There is actually progress in my setting. People were less technologically and magically advanced in the past. For example, it took millenia to discover magic and then advance it to the highly refined and "predictable" state of the present. This went in cycles with advances and set backs, but...

Will the Magic System be shown the door?

I've always seen spell casting as one of the most modular of systems. I prefer: (a) Limited Number of Spells Memorizable, (b) Do Not Forget Them After Casting, (c) Spells "powered" by Spell Points, (d) Need Base Number of Spell Points to Cast and Extra Spell Points Can Be Used to Increase...

    What did TSR do wrong?

Yes SPI. My typing is notoriuosly bad. Oh I realize it was a financial decision. I just don't like it when a company can make a deal then say oops I think we charged too little, sorry we won't honor your subscription anymore, when as a private individual I could never get away with that. I...

    What did TSR do wrong?

I'd have to agree. TSRs treatment of SSIs customers was also awful after they acquired the company. If I had to use one word describing TSR almost from the get go it would be arrogant.

What do you want to ask WotC?

    (1) Will I be able to download the on-line "magazine" as a pdf? (2) Will I be able to access issues I subscribed to at anytime, or if my subsciption lapses will I not be able to see archived issues even ones I "paid" for? (3) Will I have the option to have issues sent to me as e-mail or at...
