    Just Imagine You Creating..

I'd take TFT, add character progression (level & skill based) with secondary attribute categories to progress instead of prime attributes, tune it to a more true skill based system ala Traveller, add in rules for sense use, and make it amenable to using polyhedral dice.

    General TFT:ITL discussion

You might be amazed by what you learn when you look into it, as well as other RPGs from the late 70's. You may find that concepts touted in LA, C&C and D&D have been around for quite some time. TFT may also show you how a combat system can be more tactically "realistic" than AD&D but yet...

    General TFT:ITL discussion

Similar to what I've heard, and actually investigated once where such rights lay. Stopped by the realization that I'd have to spend significant time or several thousand to nail it down. Others have tried one can always contact them. Purportedly Metagaming asked for $250,000 (this back in...

In my humble opinion as well.

    General TFT:ITL discussion

I played it long ago around 1982-83; loved it. Recently rediscovered it. TFT is one of the unsung classics cut short by the owner of Metagames wigging out and Steve Jackson moving on. I read from a Steve Jackson post that the game was at one time the 2nd best selling fantasy RPG in the US...

On the nature of dungeons in your campaign.

Another source: Once an above ground complex/city now buried by time. volcanic ash, etc. Passages have remain or have been carved to acess teh old structures. IMC one justification for the underground structures is it provides excellent protection against divination and such. So...

    Educational Benefits of RPGs

Just as information reference, I started in 1975-76 with war games and was full swing into RPGs by 1977-78. reading comprehension & vocabulary I'd have to say that the detailed and highly structured rules of Squad Leader did more for my reading skills than RPGs. I've always been an extensive...

Ever had a player in your group throw a tantrum or worse? Most uncomfortable moment?

Wow, I guess I've been incredibly fortunate. Annoying behaivor saw plenty of that back in high school, but in over in almost 30 years of playing/DMing never seen a tantrum until last year. Then it had nothing to do with the game. Responded to an e-mail call for players, the DM just had two...

Looking for advice on the size of a city

8,000 makes sense and would call this a city by medieval standards, a small city by Roman standards. If they are planting wheat seeding 2 bu/acre with an average yield of 4:1 (a good conservative medieval tech number), you'll need 2 ac per person assuming 12bu year to feed one adult human male...

An Examination of Differences between Editions

Reduced quote to save space. I know exactly what you are talking about. In earlier editions this could also become annoying where DMs required you to explain everything in nitty-gritty detail, forget to say we look at the ceiling when we enter the room and you could die. Hence the creation...

Industry Advice for buying a hobby game store

Pendragon67, do you have a business plan? If you don't write one, you'll likely need one for any business loan. That should tell you the tale. The current owner, if he is serious about selling, should let you look at his books and tax returns for the business so you can get an idea of the...

Industry Advice for buying a hobby game store

I think that is good advice. Given a choice I'm much more likely to purchase from an acutal physical store, a few pictures that lead me to believe it is a real store works wonders in confidence. Internet retailing and e-bay auction/buy it now (especially if you sell collectibles) seems like a...

    Beholders

That's the reason for it. They claim them as their intellectual property under product identity. In the US this is a common law doctrine,to the best of my knowledge, and falls under the broad umbrella of misappropriation cases and is similar to trade dress. It's not copyright and you can...

Never. Combat rolls are usually in the open.

On the nature of dungeons in your campaign.

Exactly! I find this half the fun when designing a dungeon and actually enjoy starting off with some random population of monsters and coming up with some rationale for it.

Need ideas for a fantasy Egypt

The feeling of being innately superior to outsiders was a very ancient Egyptian notion. Hence the incription "Lo' the vile asiatic!" And a great disdain for herder folk. The great pyramid, and all such tombs were surrounded by cities dedicated to serving the entombed. The Egytians were...
