"HF" vs. "S&S" gaming: the underlying reason of conflict and change in D&D

Good stuff, thanks guys for the responses: A few notes: 1) I think some are missing the point that, what defines HF vs. S&S is the underlying worldview and moral system - basically: God on the side of good vs. No God, or God takes no sides. 2) The presence of demi-humans, clerics, vancian...

Ok, I'm sorry then. We agree. Let's just keep with the main topic and everything friendly.

"HF" vs. "S&S" gaming: the underlying reason of conflict and change in D&D

Hey dude, just sharing a personal analysis some might find interesting, even if they don't agree. I can't care less about how people miles and miles away from me are playing. Each will have fun it's own way and that's great. I don't wish to establish myself as the RPG police. I don't consider...

"HF" vs. "S&S" gaming: the underlying reason of conflict and change in D&D

Very good posts all round folks, even those I don't agree on. Some quick clarifications because I'm a bit hurried. I run the risk of beign unclear, but hey. 1) I don't wish to be controversial. I want, if posible, end with the old school vs. new school conflict and take the discussion a bit...

Some comments I posted on my blog that can help to clarify some points: Should S&S gaming be rules light?

This article is a repost from my blog: Zeta Orionis "High Fantasy" vs. "Sword & Sorcery" gaming: the underlying reason of conflict and change in D&D OPEN AND PUBLIC FIRST DRAFT When I was in the process of discovering old-school, there were a couple of forum discussions that had a key role in...

A modern generic rules light game?

I find risus to be way too light, generic and abstract. I would prefer a "modern era" game and a bit more defined. More a less like old editions of D&D in bulk of rules. I would really love a d20 Modern Lite. That would be awesome. But microlite20 modern is too light.

A modern generic rules light game?

The thing is... I really think that d20 Modern is a good game. But in order to be perfect for me, I would need it to be: - much more streamlined in mechanics. - easier NPC and foe creation and GMing (which d20 sucks at) - work well without FX at all (the Will save with out FX is totally...

When does D&D stop becoming D&D?

No Vancian Magic = No D&D to me. Therefore 4E not D&D to me. Great generic fantasy game. But not D&D.

    Gritty gone?

The stupid DM vs. Players paradigm does not exist in my world. Grim n' Gritty is also meant to be fun. The DM makes a fun adventure. Harder, but fun too. He's not out there to outright kill PCs. Many players out there enjoy gritty style of play. And many who don't play D&D, for not finding it...

    Gritty gone?

Me and my friends would totally play in a game like that. We also like it gritty like the OP.

    Gritty gone?

I'm no fan of 4E but I'd do it this way: Divide all total HPs by 2 (or more). Keep same damage capacity. Done.
