D&D 5E (2014) UA 8 Bastions and Cantrips playtest survey is now live. Update now closed.

That's not the real issue here. WotC simply does not have the time to waste on revising anything more complex than a simple tweak here and there. These playtests have effectively two results you can vote on : Throw it away (and keep the 2014 rules), or Use these new rules (basically) as-is...

D&D 5E (2014) UA 8 Bastions and Cantrips playtest survey is now live. Update now closed.

The problem with that is: If something is a good idea, but needs work, you are just SOL. Giving something a "4" means the item in question gets significantly above the approval threshold, and it's shipped as is. On the flip side, giving something a "3" translates into "throw the idea into the...

D&D General In Search of "the" Ideal Monster Presentation

The entire point of me buying a book of monsters, is so that I can do less work prepping or running a game. So to that end I want: A place in the world for the monster. Like seriously, how do these things exist, or even why do they exist? Novel tactics for monsters beyond "They move and...

    The Mourning After (Horror) (IC)

4th of Zarantyr, 998 YK. Afteroon. Room 203, The Vice House, Southshore, Metrol, Cyre. The warm stew and relatively relaxing nature of a friendly bar allowed you to unwind after a long morning. Shortly after your meal, you head up the stairs. The interior of the room seems rather, mundane, for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Niche protection: the wizard’s niche

Does having a niche mean that nobody else is allowed to do anything with that niche ever?

    D&D 5E (2014) Niche protection: the wizard’s niche

The wizard's unofficial niche is to take the heat for all balance issues in the game.

    D&D 5E (2014) Min-maxers: What's the best class and race for a Tier 1 investigative game?

Hexblood Liniage (Tabaxi) You have a climb speed equal to your walking speed (handy for urban games) You have proficiency in Perception and Stealth (great for investigators) You can add Disguise Self to your spell list and cast it once per day for free. Your Eerie Token power can be used to bug...

    D&D 5E (2024) A Revised Necromancer Subclass?

Most of the Wizard Subclasses weren't particularly popular, largely because the statistics were split 8 ways from the start of the 2014 PHB. The main problem with the Necromancer is that it doesn't feel like a Necromancer until level 6. When you get improved undead minions. And even then the...

D&D 5E (2024) What would be the path between Wildshape Templates and Use an Beast statblock?

I honestly doubt they will even use the MM for wildshape statblocks. If anything it's going to be a curated list of animals in the PHB. And from there, it's just one step further to add dynamic level scaling.

D&D 5E (2024) What would be the path between Wildshape Templates and Use an Beast statblock?

So all they wanted was a name? Thats easy to palliate. Just make a template called ursine spirit and let it scale, without the baggage of being tied down to monster stat bock.

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

It doesn't matter what label you affix to high level Martials; Psionic, Supernatural, Mundane, Gazorniplat, or any other made up tag you can append on them to say "But this totally isn't magic!" They will never be balanced until they receive a degree of narrative control. And by receiving such...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

Why? Not every spell has to be good for everyone. Especially when they can just pick up Greenflame Blade instead. Sure they will. Fire Bolt can't be disarmed, nor does it require weapon and focus juggling to get off Real Leveled Spells.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

The best thing about True Strike is that Mages can finally attack with their Staves, or Spears, or Crossbows, and not be a total joke of an option.

D&D 5E (2024) Bonus Unearthed Arcana Reveals The Bastion System

They finally fixed True Strike! But it's weird that True Strike does Radiant Damage and Shillelagh does Force damage. You would think it would be reversed.

    D&D 5E (2024) Elves without racism [+]

This is similar to how I changed elves in my homebrew. Only instead of Mythals, it was Temples of the Land, and an Elf could change their attunement by meditation/prayer at one of them at any time, though it took several hours to do so.

D&D 5E (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

I'm waiting on the DMG UA coming out, but I need to get that monster math, things will become much more clear then.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Counterspell less frustrating now?

I just don't see WotC doing anything like letting the fighter stab a caster to interrupt a spell right now. The Revision just isn't going to have that huge of a change to a core mechanic.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Counterspell less frustrating now?

Here are the problems as I see them: (New and presumably Revised) Monsters don't use Counterspell, they use Negate Spell. Therefore, players will not be seeing the benefits of this nerf, it's only there to make monsters harder to shut down. (And I use the term "shut down" liberally, because...
