Worldbuilding and urban campaigns: principles, techniques, and ideas

Can y'all take your personal beef outside this thread? It's starting to obscure the discussion I originally intended to have.

Worldbuilding and urban campaigns: principles, techniques, and ideas

I love city-based campaigns. In fact, I'm running one right now. I know that, for me, urban campaigns play to my strengths because the smaller scale of an urban campaign hit on what I enjoy most about roleplaying: people and relationships. I most enjoy campaigns that allow me to create a sense...

    New Class: Gadgeteer

This is a really neat class, and I would love to try it in one of my more experimental games. Quick question: Is there a reason why the gadgeteer only gets one saving throw instead of two? Also, I notice that the skill list is slightly different. Will you be updating that anytime soon?

Why do D&D players put such an emphasis on rules and tactics?

In my experience, I think that a lot of it has to do with players who have experienced a more adversarial style of DMing and have learned to prioritize mechanics over narrative. So they get certain fixed notions about what D&D is and what it's for, and that colors how they approach every D&D...

D&D 5E (2014) Your wishlist for fantasy adventure beyond medieval Europe

That would be pretty cool. Is there an example in fiction you'd like to see emulated?

D&D 5E (2014) Your wishlist for fantasy adventure beyond medieval Europe

And I definitely understand where you're coming from, as the "medieval Europe" thing is more a historical and stylistic feature than a mechanical one. When you say ancient world, what kind of thing do you mean? Are we talking Xena, or the Iliad, or something else?

How do you prevent derailing on threads?

There's a pattern I've noticed in several threads I've started on this forum where instead kicking around ideas or sharing things people like or want to play, someone has to sort of contort it into a debate about statements I never made or completely ignore the actual things I said I want to...

D&D 5E (2014) Your wishlist for fantasy adventure beyond medieval Europe

I haven't seen anyone talk or ask about rules at all. Just ideas for things they'd like to see 5e do. There is no explicit or implicit statement that D&D is inadequate for the kinds of milieus some of us want to play in.

D&D 5E (2014) Evil parties that don't fall apart: ideas, suggestions, experiences?

This is precisely what I was getting at: how to run a game for a group of characters like this without them imploding as soon as I say, "What does your character do?" Edit: To be more specific, how do I draw the line between evil and stupid? Yes. For the sake of clarification, I mean evil in...

That's great. You should start a thread about it.

D&D 5E (2014) Evil parties that don't fall apart: ideas, suggestions, experiences?

Could you tell me more about this game and how the characters managed to stick together rather than fall apart?

Thank you for actually answering my question.

D&D 5E (2014) Evil parties that don't fall apart: ideas, suggestions, experiences?

As fun as it can be to DM games where the good guys save the day, I do wonder what it would be like for the PCs to be ruthless, black-hearted scoundrels who would drown a box of kittens if the price or cause is right. What would be a good setup for an evil party that would not immediately...

D&D 5E (2014) Your wishlist for fantasy adventure beyond medieval Europe

I'm currently running a city-based campaign with an aesthetic inspired by South and South Asian cultures, and I'm having a blast creating everything for the city of Karta. And I think that, if/when this wraps up, I might want to do something inspired by stuff like Inuyasha, Big Trouble in...

How would you stat a boomerang?

I think all of that makes it way more complicated than it has to be for the sake of cool and fun. I should be able to make Sokka in this game without requiring so many special rules that it becomes more of a hassle than it's worth.

How would you stat a boomerang?

    This would work beautifully, thanks.

How would you stat a boomerang?

That is not what verisimilitude means (really, it isn't). Even if it did mean that, this level of fussiness over details is not one of my goals for giving stats for this weapon. Otherwise, I would have said that I was looking for the most realistic portrayal of a boomerang in D&D stats.
