    D&D 5E (2014) When I cracked open D&D Next, I never expected that...

Exactly! I was surprised by how big a difference backgrounds made when it came to creating characters. Backgrounds made it possible to work with my character concepts in a way that didn't require multi-classing just to be good at a skill that my character should be pretty good at. I was able to...

    D&D 5E (2014) When I cracked open D&D Next, I never expected that...

...two of my most interesting character builds thus far are a human fighter and a human sorcerer. In previous editions, I stuck to bards and rogues because I didn't want to sacrifice my character concept in order to be mechanically effective (not the same as optimized). With the addition of...

    D&D 5E (2014) A tweak for humans?

Without having tried the rules as written in play, I think that giving more flat ability score increases to humans might not be the best idea flavor-wise. I like the idea of humans distinguishing themselves not by raw ability, but by the things we learn as we adapt to different situations. But...

Neat GM advice on Female Gamers:

Re: "targeting" women Honestly, it's more a matter of not repulsing us by constantly mansplaining (instead of just listening) and doing things like this (instead of, y'know, acting like women have better things to do than please a man).

Neat GM advice on Female Gamers:

I mentioned it earlier, but my answer could be summed up as, "It's pretty creepy. :( " I can understand a boy having trouble relating to women other than his mom. That's part of growing up. But when grown-ass men can't quite wrap their heads around the idea that women are people and...

    Yes, it does. :(

    5e what would you do?

Exactly. I'd be great if the core D&D books took a hint from True20, but that's a bit far-fetched right now.

    Long Combats are Bad

I should revise my previous statement. Long combat is fine. Boring combat sucks.

Letting Players Narrate in the Game?

This is pretty much the only way I can play and enjoy it. For me, a character is not just what's on the sheet or the die roll or the things they say and do in the game. A character is a part of a world, a part of the story, given life. It's hard for me to enjoy myself in a game that doesn't...

    Long Combats are Bad

I can see where the OP is coming from. As a player, I often hate combat because more time is being spent with refereeing than with the PCs doing cool stuff. This is even the case for a skirmish or major combat. So when I GM, there are a few things I do to make it more interesting. First, I hand...

Alternative: Girls (females) in D&D/ Roleplaying

I don't believe I'm your intended audience for this (assuming that you're speaking to or about male gamers when you ask these questions), but it's an interesting topic, so I want to contribute. There's no willing or unwilling about it. It's something I do simply by virtue of being a woman...

Alternative: Girls (females) in D&D/ Roleplaying

Yay for going beyond gender binaries! And for undermining male by default!

Are you in the RPG closet?

But do they have to flaunt it so much?

Are you in the RPG closet?

Only in Massachusetts and Vermont, and they're called civil unions. But you can forget about adoption.

Settings - "empty" vs richly detailed locations

LOL! I prefer just the opposite. Zoom in on a smaller locale but keep the macro view skeletal.

    When Is PC Death Worst?

I generally put a lot of thought and energy behind a PC I create, and when I'm GM I typically expect it of players at my table. So losing a character because of a bad die roll is so . . . boring, mainly because inflicting pain, agony and torment upon the PCs is so much more interesting.
