    4e Swashbuckling campaigns?

*casts Raise Dead on the thread* I'm considering gutting a whole swath of 4e rules in favor of a single, elegant mechanic with intuitive bonuses and penalties (as opposed to the exception-based ruleset 4e currently is). I'm thinking something very simple like, d20 vs. DC with bonuses and...

    Weakness by Edition

I think a little context is in order. I don't view or use D&D as a generic fantasy roleplaying game. D&D, for me, is the system of choice when I want to do heroic action fantasy roleplaying. In other words - action movies with a fantasy twist. This keeps things in perspective for me as I decide...

Yeah. The thing I have in mind is more refined than PotC

    4e Swashbuckling campaigns?

I'll have to get back to those. I recently purchased Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, so I have to read that first. I can't believe I never thought of 7th Sea, since I played it in Shanghai and loved it! Not the whole system, but the style and setting were great.

    4e Swashbuckling campaigns?

I remember seeing something like that. Would anyone recommend making rapiers a martial rather than a superior weapon? The more I think about it, the more the idea have in mind becomes Steven Brust's Jhereg series meets Revolutionary Girl Utena.

    4e Swashbuckling campaigns?

*shrug* I was mainly speaking for my own characters, who tend to fit the shoujo ai mold for the "dominant" characters quite a bit.

    4e Swashbuckling campaigns?

Cyrano de Bergerac can be badass. His sister just needs to be able to be badass too (hence shoujo ai and not shonen ai). It's more like this: FANGIRL: That guy must be total badass! PC: How so? FANGIRL: He's so . . . pretty! PC: (snickers) FANGIRL: What? You don't think he's totally awesome...

Bah! I bought the soundtrack, thank you!

    4e Swashbuckling campaigns?

Thanks for the tips, guys! Keep 'em coming! I really enjoy character-driven campaigns. I want PCs and NPCs driven by strong passions and a heightened sense of style. Now that I think about it, what I have in mind is sort of like Steven Brust's Jhereg series with a touch (OK, a huge wallop) of...

    4e Swashbuckling campaigns?

Right now I'm in a mood for some romantic swashbuckling adventure, but I still want to use the 4e system. Does anyone have some suggestions about how to adapt the system to facilitate this? GMing tips for pulling this off? Player hints for making it work? Or better yet: Is anybody running a...

Movie Musicials: Good, Bad, or just plain Ugly?

I typically just run out of the room with my ears bleeding. But the one that stands out - and I wish that didn't - is Cats. I know, I know. It's a classic. Blah, blah, blah. But I really couldn't get into it. Even the costumes failed to keep me up, and I love a good costume. Just about every...

Vampires, Pop Culture, and Your Game

THANK YOU! From how people describe it these days, vampirism seems closer to addiction than sexuality (unless it's sexual addiction). Vampires are both scarier and more tragic when paralleled with drug addicts than with social misfits. Think about it. You have a condition that makes you crave...

    Cool sites for funny videos?

Does anyone know a site where I can find some funny videos* I can link to on my blog? I know about Heavy.com, and I can probably search for stuff on YouTube, but I'm looking for something a bit more specialized that won't force me to sift through crap to find gold. Any ideas? *My humor runs...

Role playing to the detriment of the game

I understand situations like this to be a problem with passive players. No matter how in-depth the concept, if a player does not come up with motivations to act within the world (not the same as the adventure the GM comes up with), it's like pulling teeth to get them involved. Characters need...

    Female gamers: Weal or woe?

I have that question too. The question I want to ask is: Why continue to seek out women gamers if you don't want the atmosphere to change? Better yet, why introduce a new player if you don't want anything to change about your current group? I've been the new person in a lot of groups. Speaking...
