    Gold or Silver Standard?

I concur. Besides the internal logic of it, there's also the RP value to consider. You could design a complete adventure around the prospect of gaining a particular magic item. Not to mention making a long-term enemy of an NPC who reneges on such an agreement. PC Fighter: OK, here's that...

Why do you homebrew? or Hombrew blues

I think you're on to something here. I'm starting to doubt the necessity of doing things that way in general. For me, the least interesting parts about a setting are its history and geography, while the most interesting are its culture (especially religion, folklore and mythology) and...

    Humans are a must?

I agree, and here is a bit of elaboration from my POV. Something I like to do is take humans as most people understand it and put a twist on it. Perhaps I add something, or take something away, that at first seems part of the fundamental human experience. Adapting something as simple as the...

    Humans are a must?

SpiralBound: I suppose the person who said a setting needs humans has never heard of "The Dark Crystal" or Care Bears or even watched Meerkat Manor.

DMing: How do I setup philosophical in-character discussions?

I will concur with those posters who say that giving players more complex issues to deal with would be a good idea. To elaborate, as a player, I prefer not to have a linear approach to problem-solving. Instead, I like to choose from a variety of options, each with their own consequences. This...

    Eastern European-flavored setting (in progress)

Sweet! I'd use these types of elves in a normal D&D campaign. Consider this yoinked for future reference. [/threadjack]

Getting rid of clerics in my homebrew.

shadow, If, for game balance reasons, you really want to be able to include a class that has access to cleric spells, I believe that finding or rewriting an alternative class would work best. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have cleric variants, and many more who could whip something...

What settings are you most interested in?

Aside from the options that were listed, these are the things I would like to see. My first interest would be a setting that draws from cultures and mythologies outside of Wester Europe. I'm thinking something like pre-colonial America where the stories and folktales of say, the Iroquois, are...

Best way to cope with less than 4 players?

I'd probably have them start at higher level, and/or give them equipment that would benefit them despite having fewer people in the party.

    what races in your fantasy?

to woodelf Indeed. That's precisely the approach I wish to take with all peoples in a campaign setting. It doesn't matter if it's human or non-human. I want variety within the defined groups as well as between them. In fact, a little internal inconsistency would be fascinating in this...

    what races in your fantasy?

    Ditto.

    what races in your fantasy?

You know, I would find a setting that limits PC races this way very refreshing. To compensate for the lack of different PC races (at least, mechanically speaking), I'd probably emphasize differences within each race and the various cultures and temperaments these races can produce.

    I hate monks

I'm probably way off the mark here, but sometimes I wonder if the only reason people think that normal D&D is particularly medieval and European lies in the fact that "Oriental Adventures" exists as a separate supplement. There are plenty of things in the PHB and DMG that indicate that how...

    I hate monks

This is complete and utter poppycock and has been debunked by science decades ago.

    I hate monks

In most cases, the stats of monk weapons and their simple counterparts are virtually the same. Perhaps even worse (shuriken vs. darts, for instance).

    Fantasy Races and Originality

An idea that's been on my mind for a little while now is having demihumans not be separate races in their own right, but humans who, by birth or by other means, are something different. In other words, two humans can give birth to an orc or elf if certain metaphysical elements line up. It's...

    Fantasy Races and Originality

I agree that new twists on an old theme are welcome, and I also agree that in order to keep things fresh, one must be careful of making things too one-dimensional. For instance, as written, the PHB races do seem one-dimensional. For me, the way to do that is to separate race and culture. The...

Spirit Knight, class based on Jedi!

That's all well and good, but using SP is a bit out of the normal way that D&D handles class abilities. I'm not a particular fan of the Vancian system, but you are adding additional rules to how the abilities of the spirit knight work. None of the PHB classes use points to manage the resources...

Spirit Knight, class based on Jedi!

Asmor, I really like the concept of this class, but there is something about it that just seems a bit . . . off. Perhaps it has something to do with its limited portability. To use this class, you pretty much have to adopt your magic system. Nothing wrong with your magic system, but it might...

    Alternative feats for cross-class skills

Yes, but that's not all there was to it. However, the groups you are using for your feats are almost exactly the same as those for Iron Heroes. It may be worth checking out if only to see how they grouped which skills together. That's all.
