    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

Flee doesn’t say move away as fast as you can without causing harm to yourself. Flee says move away as fast as you can; If (you believe) doing so will directly cause you harm, the spell does not work. Jeremy Crawford tweeted that OA are indirect because they potentially may not cause harm (no...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

The example wasn’t mine, but honestly everything in D&D is contrived, especially things relating to magic. The original question is what happens on the Command:Fee — “The target spends its turn moving away from you by the fastest available means.” The fastest means is using its turn to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

Sure, but to say that the rule/spell “If- A-Then-B” actually means “If-A-Then-B-Unless-Target-Doesn’t-Feel-Like-It” (as in the barbarian shrugging off damage example above) seems like a very weak system for how magic works. Unless we’re talking about wild magic, most 5e magic seems to have very...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

That’s not what the spell says though —“The spell has no Effect…if your command is directly harmful to it.” There’s no weighing of choices. In the barbarian case, the spell works because they are “brave enough” to take damage?

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

I had never considered using Command to detect traps until someone mentioned it here so am processing it “aloud” here. We are discussing magic which naturally seems absurd IRL. To help clarify things for myself, I looked up Jeremy Crawford’s Tweet regarding Flee: “Command: Flee isn't directly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

Spike Growth says “Any creature that can't see the area at the time the spell is cast must make a Wisdom (Perception) check…to recognize the terrain as hazardous before entering it.” The target would see the area they are in at the time of casting — they are not entering it — and know the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

If the target knows what is harmful to it, then it could not (assuming piercing thorns damage it) run 5 feet (or jump or any other move) through them causing itself damage.

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

Are you saying the spell knows who is immune to taking certain types of damages and works on some and not on others?

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

The OP said the target was in the Spike Growth. If they are within it and move out, they are moving while within Spike Growth which does damage, no matter if the target is on the edge of the growth moving out of it or in the middle flying up or digging down.

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

I agree that the the spell says nothing about making assumptions about the target's abilities. If the target were immune to piercing damage, the spell still doesn't work. If the danger were bypassed by AC and the Command cast at higher level on multiple targets, would the spell fail for some but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

Jumping is a special type of movement. When a creature moves...within the area (of Spike Growth), it takes ...damage for every 5 feet it travels.

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

That option violates the Command spell’s “direct harm” restriction. Doing nothing does not. The spell does not weigh potential long term harm against mitigated immediate harm.

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

That would be an indirect harm and would not cause the Command to fail.

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

Command uses the word "directly" which has 3 common definitions: 1. without changing direction or stopping. 2. with nothing or no one in between. 3. as soon as. So to be directly harmful (using a combination of 3 definitions), the effect would have to happen immediately following the triggering...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

Command: “The spell has no Effect..,if your command is directly harmful to it.” Moving within Spike Growth causes damage. If you Command to flee, you are forcing movement that will cause damage; therefore the spell fails completely. Command doesn’t say the target has to be aware of the danger...

    D&D 5E (2014) Command and spike growth

Fleeing means to run from a place of danger. Running through thorns, caltrops, or broken glass would be something harmful but only if someone moves. The Command to Flee would make someone move through something they should know is harmful. They would know there is danger from doing so; therefore...

Perhaps Dragonlance lore, maybe a short adventure. Maybe some of the in-depth monster treatment that Volo's had.
