D&D 4E What Aspects of 4E Made It into 5E?

Weren't cantrips as an at will power a 4e thing?

Any good sources for time travel adventures?

It is not exactly time travel but I8 The Ravager of Time (1st edition module) has an interesting twist where the PCs are aged by magic and have confront (now) younger versions of themselves. I ran it ages ago and it was a lot of fun back in the day. It was a big adventure from memory.

Have you ever intentionally ignored a character aspect?

You should give the 4th edition Fighter a whirl (I joke!) I never purposely choose to not not use an ability, but when I play my barbarian I never seem to remember to use my reckless attack ability (grants adv on attacks in exchange for be granting advantage to those attacking me). It may be...

If a Warlord class existed, what two saves would you give it, and why?

I could live live with either INT or WIS - I think the choices here more so demonstrates the problems associated with the weak save/strong save dilemma. INT and CHA makes the most archetype sense but doesnt make 5e save sense.

    Bashing bags of hitpoints

Yes. I still think dragons are great opponents in 5th edition but yeah I find some of the monsters to be quite bland compared to previous editions. I also find 5e leans very heavily on hp for player progression as well. Both of these demonstrate the importance of story and having other...

    D&D 5E (2014) So Why is 5E So Popular?

All of these things are relevant - compared with other things it is good cheap social fun! I also think that 5e is a somewhat gentle game compared with previous editions if you play within the guidelines/with the published adventures. This allows a focus on the story and fun. And I think this...

    Pathfinder 2E Leveling Up

Agree. I am certainly paying attention because of this. But there is the danger of having too many meaningless feats something that 4e had in spades, but given the lack of meaningful choices in 5e PC design, I think its worth the risk.

    AD&D 2E What PF2E means for D&D5E

I have never played PF because I was burnt out with 3.5 when it came out and looking for something new (which 4e delivered). I am not burnt out with 5e but I certainly like to see new things and innovation in the hobby. I also think there is market for things that WOTC is not delivering. I think...

    So...am I evil??

Given that I think many people who play RPGs have had some sympathy or experience with being unpopular in the broad sweep of popular culture - i suspect evil tendencies will be result here - despite differences of opinion over the popularity of various editions.

The Pathfinder 2 Barometer! Vote your initial hot take!

I will have a look. I like new and shiny stuff and I think there is a space for a more complicated/tactical system than 5e. In particular am interested on how martial characters work in PF2.

Mike Mearls Happy Fun Hour: The Warlord

I agree with this. I think 5e has a lot of space for different class concepts - it has the possibility of being very "modular" in allowing classes and races to be ignored and have various levels of complexity. This is evident in the way the BM has a wide range of non-magical abilities. I have...

To Mike Mearls: C'mon, bring back the whole D&D Multiverse!

Too much man! I have to say that prefer these worlds to be firewalled (for want of a better term). Not only for splitting the fanbase/market reason but just making each world the main focus/stake of the story. I think the multiverse spanning is too much for most campaigns to handle or for the 5e...

How many elves are too many elves?

You forgot about house elves. Dobby never forgets!

    D&D Beyond: Raven Queen

I still dont get the whole Shadar Kai are elves thing. Now, if I heard right the Raven Queen is an elf. It is like they are like Oprah: "elves, elves for everybody".

    Do you use skill challenges?

I never heard of them before 4e. We dont use them in my current 5e but group checks get used a lot We used them in a lot in my previous 4e campaign. Personally I found them great in abstract situations, ie navigating a valley when we were low level or navigating abyss at high level, or trying...

Editions of D&D you have played the most in your life

I tend to play one campaign per edition: 1. 4th Edition: I played the most hours of this edition largely because the campaign went to 30th level! Also its my favorite edition, despite its bad press and some of the real issues. 2. 1st Edition: I played a lot in the 80s - always set in GreyHawk...

    Basic Four

Interesting ideas - I think 4e and basic have some complementary sensibilities. But I think one thing to make this task easier is to start with levels 1-3 first to see if the basic (hah) idea works well. I think things like 4e skills and feats can be left as optional modules with stat checks as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Name level heroes for 5e

I prefer titles to tied to story rather than level. By story I mean in world achievements, relationship to one's background, and honour/reputation etc. I can imaging a low level PC having a grand title, ala a Prince Joffrey type.

D&D 5E (2014) WotC asks "If you could create one D&D subclass, what would it be and what would it do?

Either a warlord-knight who leads by example and exhortation or Paladin who hunts undead and demons with a bow.

D&D 5E (2014) Ramping up the Challenge in 5e Combats

I think giving higher level monsters damaging/disabling auras, cooler reactions and/or actions on multiple points of the initiative to make them more unpredictable and ups the threat level. It is one thing I did like in 4e.
