D&D 5E (2014) Should WotC launch a new Living Campaign with D&D Next?

This logic is what I fear WotC is thinking right now. My only counter would be to look at Pathfinder Society. Their Living Campaign is a mostly free enterprise that generates interest in their products. Increased interest means increased revenue albeit indirectly. It's a small investment that...

D&D 5E (2014) Should WotC launch a new Living Campaign with D&D Next?

Per Wikipedia, a Living Campaign is "gaming format within the table-top role-playing game community that provide the opportunity for play by an extended community within a shared universe." I probably should have mentioned that LG, LFR, and Pathfinder Society either have supported or still...

D&D 5E (2014) Should WotC launch a new Living Campaign with D&D Next?

Does D&D Next need to launch with a new Living Campaign? The first Living Campaign was Living City during the AD&D days. With the launch of 3rd Edition, WotC also started Living Greyhawk. When 3rd Edition gave way to 4th Edition, Living Greyhawk was ended and Living Forgotten Realms was...

    D&D 5E (2014) 28/1/13 L&L D&DNext goals part Four

I was kind of hoping that this article would be about custom world building and include things like how to create home brewed deities, races, and prestige classes. The wish list though is pretty interesting though. And as someone said above, please bring back Birthright.

Armor Class vs. Damage Reduction - Your preference

I used to prefer AC to DR but then I played Savage Worlds. Everyone has natural DR in the form of their Toughness attribute with armor adding to it. This increases realism and allows for Savage World's best feature, no hit points (or very little hit points anyway). Since your not tracking every...

New Saga Edition GM: What problems should I be aware of?

My fix for skill focus was to let the character add his level instead of half his level to the skill. This means it equals a +5 at 10th level. The other thing I would look out for are the telekinetic force powers which can get powerful.

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

I didn't say you couldn't do the sentry, just that it didn't feel natural to me. My dungeon crawls are designed as multi day mini campaigns not a series of encounters. The problem is not just the encounter design system but also the focus on encounters and resources tied to them. I hoping D&D...

D&D 4E 4e Encounter Design... Why does it or doesn't it work for you?

Most of my encounter design is building a dungeon and populating it with monsters. These monsters might be separate encounters or they might overlap depending on how the PCs behave. For instance, a sentry might escape and alert a larger force of the PCs arrival. If the PCs kill the sentry before...

    Choosing a Star Wars game

I've played every Star Wars RPG to date except the FFG version (which is in beta). SWSE is good but not great and requires some house ruling (see my sig for my campaign and house rules). The biggest house rule every GM does is nerf Skill Focus especially Skill Focus (Use The Force). The d6...

Input for starting a Star Wars Saga Edition game?

It's not that vehicle or starship combat is boring. It's that it is boring if you are not a pilot or gunner.

Input for starting a Star Wars Saga Edition game?

I ran a long running SWSE campaign (see my sig) and now I'm playing in an another one. I heavily house ruled to fix a lot of the items the thread has already mentioned. To fix Skill Focus: UTF, I changed it so that it allows you to add your level to the skill bonus instead of +5. Normally you...

D&D 5E (2014) Parrying and Protecting versus spells and othe rstuff

Seems to me an effect that works off an attack should also apply to spells that require an attack roll. If it only works off a melee attack, then it should also apply to spells that require a melee attack roll.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing in Next

I see a lot of references to how Star Wars Saga Edition does multi-classing. I ran a long running campaign and I'm playing in one now. Multi-classing in D&D should be different than Star Wars. In SWSE, everyone multi-classes their characters. I don't know anyone that sticks with the same class...

Legends & Lore 09/03 - RPG design philosophy

I don't get the Mearls hate (from this post anyway). WotC wants to make a product that sells well and that requires R&D to create a game that allows for as many play/DMing styles as possible.

Future of D&D Keynote Speech [UPDATE - with video!]

I'm pretty sure the local RPG retailers would hate that idea as much as record stores hate iTunes. It would pretty much ensure they would stop selling D&D altogether.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclass in 5E

I'd like to know the design goals of multi-classing. Multi-class casters should be less effective than full class casters, but not so less they become ineffective. In other words, less spells but just as effective when they do cast them. Multi-class casters should have similar save/magic attack...

    D&D 5E (2014) [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

Anyone find it weird that the cleric has +2 in both weapon and magic attacks for levels 1-5. The rogue gets +3 weapon at level 5 while the fighter and wizard get +4 at level 4 in weapon and magic respectively. Could the cleric be a jack of all trades but master of none? Also, two different...

    Surprise!

Again, punish those who are surprised and don't reward those who are doing the surprising. That way you only have to have one rule instead of two.

    Surprise!

So why not penalize the surprised instead of rewarding the surprisers? If a character is surprised the Use an Item action costs movement.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mass Combat in 5E

As a fan of Birthright, of course I want mass combat and domain ruling subsystems. I don't think they aren't going to make rules just for one setting (no matter how awesome). If they do create a mass combat rule system, the timing will most likely depend on how fast they think players will get...
