D&D 4E Needing a crash course in 4e to DM

O.K. a short run down: First, things you will need/want 1. A Battle map/grid: The game is very precise in what its abilities do. Everything is measured in one unit, and diagonals are counted as 1 unit. Powers will be listed as "push 1" or "Push 3" which means you move the enemy 3 units away...

    New Rituaaaals

This entire idea is retarded. Rituals are rituals and not powers for a reason. That reason is Rituals, when cast in a single action or round, break the game. All of these spells were removed from the wizard repertoire because when only one class has access to them it breaks the game. You are...

Powers that weren't as good as you thought or were better.

2 square speed. So 4 on a run, and 8 on a double-move-run. Slow is good, especially with difficult terrain(and wizards get a full encounter difficult terrain as soon as level 5 or 9). But prone is still better most of the time. Remember, its not "they can't attack" its "they can't attack and...

    Most powerful, flexible party

    2 Warlords or Warlord/Cleric, 1 rogue, 1 great weapon fighter(or Paladin), 1 archery ranger/warlock.

Maximizing the yield of Power Attack... a formula!

You can guess based on the type of monster. Soldiers are likely to have High AC. Brutes, skirmishers, artillery are likely to have lower AC. Controllers will be in the middle. Another good basic idea is "Are you a fighter making an OA with either decent wisdom or combat reflexes/blade...

Powers that weren't as good as you thought or were better.

Readied actions set your initiative right before the action that triggered them. This usually doesn't mess with the order much.

Powers that weren't as good as you thought or were better.

Prone is a lot better than you think when you have fewer enemies than players. Someone should ready an action when they get up and/or end their movement adjacent. E.G. Two players have a prone ability: Player 1 hits with the prone: Player 2 readies his prone for as soon as the enemy gets up...

    Healing Word out of encounter?

If the designers did not intend for healing powers to be expended every encounter and during encounter downtime(or just before encounter downtime), then they would not have made the powers encounter powers. They would have made them daily powers with a high number of uses. You should be using...

    Broken? The popsicle/marshmellow attack

Dragons breath has an attack bonus to make up for that.

Stacking of magical and mundane items (Forked Thread: Great weapon fighter...)

You can hold it. You just cant use it. Just like you can hold a weapon in your shield hand if you are wearing a light shield. You just cant use it. I have constructed a logical argument. I have done so in two manners. 1. Definition: The Definition of the rules flows logically. Definition is a...

Stacking of magical and mundane items (Forked Thread: Great weapon fighter...)

We've been over this at least 10 times. Nothing prevents you from wearing both items. The rules prevent you from benefiting from both items. They both have no benefit so it doesn't matter. If one doesn't have a benefit it doesn't matter(so you could wear a magic pendant and a mundane cloak...

Well that didn't take long, wizard has been shelved.

*Sigh* Look, some guy said "Ray of Frost and Thunderwave are awesome, i love having control on my at wills" and I said "Yea, its a shame they are both against fort though". Which is the same as "Yea they are, it would be nice if one of them attacked something other than fort though" or "Yea...

    Forced Movement and Walking Wounded

The wording is very specific and different on each. Wall of Fire/Blade Barrier... "When a creature enters". Blood Pulse "Every square it leaves" Had those powers been intended to be the other way, the text would read. "When a creature moves into" or "For every square a creature moves" E.G...

Well that didn't take long, wizard has been shelved.

That is why its a shame, because you don't take it. Good lord try and keep up. Here is a nice little analogy Me: Oh man, it would be nice if axes didn't totally suck compared to hammers or Hammers got Berserker weapons You: No it would not, use a Shield Me: Yes, but I want to use an big two...

Apparently Wizards are perfectly balanced :)

Doesn't CoD do its damage at the beginning of the enemies turn and not the end? Or is it just an issue with range?

Apparently Wizards are perfectly balanced :)

You've got to hit your slow and immob effects before the enemy gets to you. E.G. Here are two good tactics 1. Go first and immobilize/slow/diffiuclt terrain all but one of the enemy and then let your friends surround that guy and beat on him 2. Delay until just after the first enemy has...

Well that didn't take long, wizard has been shelved.

Good holy lord, Thunderwave and Ray of Frost are not the same freaking power. You have two freaking at wills and if you choose both of these, both being the heaviest control and lowest damage/range you will be hitting fortitude and only fortitude. So its a shame that they are both against fort...

Well that didn't take long, wizard has been shelved.

*sigh* The two strongest control at-wills the wizard have both target fortitude. Brutes(which you will get a lot of and want to slow and push a lot) have high fortitude. Ill let the rest be implicit.
