D&D 5E (2014) Clues in the Core Rulebooks

How did the playtest handle them?

    The End of Starting Gold

Isn't that how old Werewolf (and presumably all WoD) handles it? I played it once ages ago but it sounds familiar. And Dresden Files has some sort of wealth attribute too.

    The End of Starting Gold

Having cooperative, mature players who aren't interested in outdoing each other is really the only guarantee. (And rules will never guarantee a level playing field if the GM is blinded by their relationship. Starting gold rules will guarantee everyone has the same gold to start with but it's...

    The End of Starting Gold

My group often ignores starting gold and players take what their character would reasonably have. GMs are the final arbiter on whether a player takes too much or too expensive or rare equipment but the self policing works and I don't recall a GM ever needing to step in.

    D&D 5E (2014) Evil Campaign?

Has he spoken with the DM about his character concept? If the DM is adamant about not playing CE characters, being secretive or dodgy about the character won't bring the DM around. But explaining the concept and how he wants to play the character at the table could change the DM's mind. And...

7th Sea Hits ONE MILLION DOLLARS (AKA The Top 100+ RPG Kickstarters Ever!)

Good point. His experience could tell him this is well within reach.

D&D 5E (2014) Why does no one play Goliath?

And the Minotaur, the Chimera, the Sphynx, the Hydra, and Quetzalcouatl.

7th Sea Hits ONE MILLION DOLLARS (AKA The Top 100+ RPG Kickstarters Ever!)

That's my worry too. They say the core rulebook will be done by October 2016 and everything else will be done by December 2017. I don't know generally how long it takes to create the stuff they promised but it seems like an awful lots of stuff to finish in 21 months.

    D&D 5E (2014) Build advice

Good call. The character could have some sort of connection to the fiddle-playing grigs.

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks & Patrons

I think you should emulate the drama of a parent who's desperately trying to connect with their angsty teenager by allowing the conflict between the two while having the patron be overly accommodating and supportive towards the player. "I try everything to reach him but he keeps pushing me away!"

    Zombie Apocalypse campaign

I'd use Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu. It's simple and easy to run. It has sanity checks that you can use for when people see the dead shambling around and for when they see horribly gruesome deaths. And it's sufficiently deadly for the genre.

D&D4: Most Unique and Interesting Powers.

It's been so long since I played 4E but the most interesting powers to me were the non-combat utility ones (I recall many of the skill powers being interesting in this way) and while not technically powers, the rituals. Both helped expand the game away from the tactical wargamish aspect and...

    Question About New GM Mistakes

As Arilyn noted, aspects can be tricky to write and implement well. Be flexible about letting players revamp or replace aspects until they get ones that do what they want and play well in practice.

    D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft= Meh

I have limited experience with RL. We played one module in 2nd Ed. and I read many of the 4E Domain of Dread articles (which were comprised of a dreadlord, their domain, and a few session long mini-adventure). What I appreciated the most about RL from those Domain of Dread articles is that...

D&D 5E (2014) Dwarf Deity dealing with Agriculture

Hanseath, a lesser dwarven deity of war, carousing, and alcohol, from 3.5's Races of Stone seems to fit the bill. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanseath

D&D 5E (2014) ranger getting caught all of time---What to do?

Those are fair rulings. I was trying to highlight that when to use Passive Perception isn't as clear cut as you originally suggested and with GM adjudication both you and MostlyDM can be right.

D&D 5E (2014) ranger getting caught all of time---What to do?

Note that the rule saying "characters don't contribute their passive Wisdom (Perception) scores to the group's chance of noticing hidden threats" is specifically as the group travels through a dungeon or the wilderness (as noted in the "Activity while traveling" section). Also note that the...

D&D 5E (2014) What can my character lie about?

That sort of lying would definitely irritate me. But if it was more innocuous lying, like bragging, I wouldn't have an issue.

D&D 5E (2014) What can my character lie about?

I think telling the other players that your character is a liar is a good idea. I played in a game with a shapeshifter PC who used aliases and different guises instead of his natural one. I didn't have an issue with the shapeshifter's paranoia but it caused a bit of a rift in the party because...

D&D 5E (2014) What psionic powers do YOU want to see?

Buff and debuffs aren't something I think of for psionics but I agree with everything else in feartheminotaur's list. I love the 3.5 Uncarnate PrC's paramount ability to become an incorporeal being of mental consciousness only but that seems too specific and powerful an ability to base a suite...
