D&D 5E (2014) Evil character in the party

While the situation can be dealt with in-character, the crux can be that the other players would rather spend their gaming time moving the plot forward than dealing with disruptive situations. I played a kender once and to demonstrate their unwitting kleptomania the GM would remove items from...

D&D 5E (2014) The RPG or the Brand?

Great point. I guess to be more accurate I should say that I think it has all that it needs to potentially be a successful franchise. A poor script, terrible dialogue, or some unforeseen trouble could certainly make it fail.

D&D 5E (2014) The RPG or the Brand?

I think it would be difficult for a Drizzt trilogy of movies to not be successful. Blade , Wanted , and Kick-Ass were franchises that had no familiarity from the public (and little familiarity from comic nerds) and did not have the Marvel brand loyalty but did well, nonetheless. The Drizzt...

    D&D 5E (2014) Scariest Monster Ever

In a Call of Cthulhu game our group investigated strange lights in the mountains of a remote community far from the city. We interviewed an old hermit and throughout the interview he kept bringing up his cabbage garden while honing his axe. The GM played it so creepy and spooked us so much...

D&D 5E (2014) Evil character in the party

My six year old daughter made her first D&D character yesterday and decided to be an evil drow. I confirmed about a hundred times, "You don't want to be a hero? You want to be a villain?" We only did character creation yesterday but she said she wants her character to own a castle. It'll be...

D&D 5E (2014) Evil character in the party

If having an Evil acting character in the campaign, I recommend the players and GM discuss and resolve the issue. In-game solutions can sometimes work but in my experience characters threatening other characters probably won't change the players' behavior. (At least not for long.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Which non-Realmsian setting for you?

I'd love to see FFG's Midnight. With 5E's non-magical healing and lack of reliance on magic items, it might be a simple conversion already. Although I'm not sure how the heroic paths would fit into the 5E paradigm. Since they were in exchange for having no magic items, you could get away...

    Temple of Elemental Evil Boardgame

I really enjoyed the older games. To me they're solely a cooperative board game and would advise against buying them if you wanted an RPG. I would advise against it (as written) even if for a dungeoncrawl because it requires constant progress.

D&D 5E (2014) DMs - How often to wild surge?

Definitely PnPgamer--CapnZapp got it backwards. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) DMs - How often to wild surge?

In 2nd Edition my GM let me develop a 1st level spell that let me roll on the wild surge table and choose the number rolled or the option below it. I don't recall it ever being useful but it was glorious.

D&D 5E (2014) DMs - How often to wild surge?

I've loved wild mages since 2nd Edition's Tome of Magic. Gaining advantage is nice but the reason I love the wild sorcerer is for the wild surges. If I was playing one I would want the GM to have wild surges happen as often as possible. And I would want to roll the wild surge myself. Getting...

D&D 5E (2014) Players Killing Players for stupid reason

I really enjoyed his comics Rising Stars, Supreme Power, and Bullet Points.

D&D 5E (2014) Characters that annoy you (and/or the players who play them)

No one else in my group seems bothered by this, so there's no reason for a smackdown tool. I used to love keeping my character's backstory secrets hidden from the other players because I liked imagining how incredible the reveal would be. In practice the Usual Suspect type of reveal rarely...
