Skill Challenge for Return of the Burning Plague

I am a little worried about how to juggle six players at once if they're done sequentially. It seems like the first few players to think of something will solve the problem on their own, then move to the next problem and solve it on their own. Hardly a choice for heroes! Well you have some...

Force Orb: Secondary attacks on a miss?

It seems like the open 4E philosophy of 'just say yes' and 'try any whacky thing you like and we'll figure out a roll for it' is already being strangled in its crib. Just saying.

Skill Challenge for Return of the Burning Plague

I'm going to try running 'Return of the Burning Plague' this weekend, but I'd like to start it off with a skill challenge similiar to Escape from Sembia. I'd like some suggestions. Roughly, I'm thinking that a couple of kobolds snuck into town and started a fire, only to be killed by the...

    Power Source / Role Query

Um, no. No it doesn't appear that way at all. Quite the contrary, some power sources have multiple of the same role or none of one role. For example, there's only going to be one Controller in the core rules, and that's a wizard. No divine or martial controllers.

Anyone else notice the weirdness about Defenses?

Given the importance the developers have placed on "getting the math right", I'm pretty sure they've got the various attacks and defenses balanced all right. Oh, undoubtedly there will be little corner cases and hidden problems, but not the basic stuff like how fast defenses increase.

    Random Speculation on Psionics

Remember that they're getting away from 'needless symmetry'. There doesn't have to be a psionic class for each role, or only one class per role.

    D&D 4E The problem I've having with 4e.

I think some folks may be mistaking the intent behind the limitations on magic rings. It is by no means to protect the game from DMs giving out powerful items too early. If that were the case, they would have done it for all magical items. As it is, there is nothing to prevent a DM from...

Player who can't get the numbers right

The game is satisfying for me. Again, I'm not the one who is unhappy. I'm concerned that I'm making someone else unhappy. Why would I move on? Nothing. It's not like the lady's unhappiness is disrupting the game. And you shouldn't get the wrong impression here. I'm not exactly making the...

Player who can't get the numbers right

I do try. I think my difficulty comes in the fact that D&D is a team game. There's a certain balance between minding your own business and looking out to see that the party/team is doing well. Well, I'd say it's her problem in the sense that she ends up feeling frustrated and tense about my...

Player who can't get the numbers right

Did you ever wonder if that player told you he couldn't be bothered to learn the rules because that was less humiliating than admitting that he had tried really hard to learn the rules and was incapable of doing so? Actually doing something is generally much more conducive to learning something...

Player who can't get the numbers right

Because I'm a bad person sometimes, and I place the needs of others inferior to my own desires. Why does anybody do things they know will tick other people off? It was a general question directed at the table, not at me, so it's not like I was walking off in the middle of a conversation. But...

Player who can't get the numbers right

You're absolutely right that she's never going to get it. I've been playing with her for over a year in various D&D games. It's not a matter of needing more time. She just has a lousy memory and cannot get to the point where this stuff is intuitive for her. It's not even that she's too busy...

Player who can't get the numbers right

    1) She's a barbarian/ranger with a spiked chain. So mostly it's running up and attacking things. She doesn't use trips or disarms or anything fancy like that. She doesn't even have to figure out power attacks, since she refuses to take Power Attack. 'What is my to-hit bonus' and 'what is my...

Player who can't get the numbers right

Nice lady, but not a strong gamer. Me, I need to shut up. That's the problem in nutshell. Okay, so there's this player who is in a couple of the games I play in. She seems incapable of getting the numbers to add up correctly for her character on a consistent basis. She's always messing up...

Trip is an Encounter Power now

I think the 3E designers had a shiny new mechanic called "attack of opportunity", and when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail. They probably went over a lot of different things and made quick decisions about whether it would draw an AoO without thinking much about how often those...

    Monster Design--from a designer's standpoint

You're right that your "patron imp" won't be possible in 4E as it first comes out. That's because it belongs to a specific category of "helper creature" that the 4E design team freely admits they're still working on. We're talking about things like wizard familiars, druid animal companions...

    Dying and Raise Dead...

Lots of people say this, but I'd like to know exactly what "threat of death" means. Assuming that the PCs don't make any stupid mistakes, what is the desired chance that a particular PC will die from bad dice rolls? 10% per level? 5% per level? 1% per level? Less? More? How likely does...

Any New Info on Skill Encounters?

I think your use of "this round with your movement" is telling. One of the differences between a skill-based encounter and a combat encounter is that a skill-based encounter doesn't necessarily have to be tracked round-by-round and in terms of tactical movement. Tactical movement is just an...

    Travel Domain: Freedom of Movement

Yes it does. So not only does the Travel Domain grant access to such phat wizard spells as Fly, Dimension Door, and Teleport, but it also makes a cleric nearly immune to grappling. Not coincidentally, Travel is considered one of the most powerful domains out there.

    Dying and Raise Dead...

I think PCs will be at a much lower risk of death through the Heroic levels. Unless your DM throws up an overwhelming encounter (4th level dragon at 1st level party) or unless your party seriously screws up its tactics or unless you get a freakishly bad strong of rolls, nobody's PC is going to...
