It's D&D's 40th anniversary. Tell me your D&D history, and what it means to you!

I've been a fan of F&SF since the 60's. I frequented the NYC conventions in the 70's, where I watched a few OD&D games played. I was a subscriber to S&T, and sent away for some orc miniatures from an ad in one of the issues. At a con I bought the Dungeon boardgame and Traveller's Snapshot, which...

Why simpler - much simpler - is better

I think it's a matter of how many rules your group requires, and enjoys implementing. I think there can also be a difference between a storytelling game, and a game of navigating a set of rules to victory. One group may even enjoy both pursuits.

<sigh> I really have to get in more gaming time in Mystara!

Evolution of Rules, is it really a good thing or not?

In response to the question in the Subject Line: No. No, it's not.

Did Dragonlance kill D&D and take its stuff? (And a Question of the Way Forward)

Asis my usual habit, when I see a topic with this many pages ofresponses, I'll just post without reading all the pages ofreminiscences and streams of consciousness. I started playing D&Din the 70's, in high school, but not 'really' until college. Thegolden age doesn't have to be twelve, it's...

What is the Greatest Dungeon Crawl Ever Published?

Caverns of Thracia. Ran it a few times, always loved it. Dark Tower comes in for second place, probably because it's for higher levels, and the fact that I only ran it once.

    Favorite D&D Deity?

He doesn't care about your vote.

    Favorite D&D Deity?

Mitra from "Dark Tower?" Or, "The Frog God?" Ah, the famous "Rizzo, the Rat God!"

    Favourite Non-D&D games?

Well, I'm not a regular poster on this board, but I'll chime in. Other than 1st ed AD&D, my favorite non-oneshot games to run or play are Chaosium's 2nd ed Runequest, Classic Traveller, and Call of Cthulhu. I also bulldozered my way through running a Fading Suns campaign, but I have to say that...

Deluxe City of Terrors: Flying Buffalo Offers “Old School” Adventure Time for Solo Play!

I still have my original copy of this book. Lots of fun. I'd love to see more of the T&T world released in a more traditional format for regular campaigning.

    Favorite D&D Campaign Setting?

Wilderlands of High Fantasy. Close runners-up are the Principalities of Glantri, and Spelljammer. Generally, I'm an old-schooler, and Wilderlands is what I started with. But Glantri was so awesome, Bruce Heard set up an amazing place for wizard characters in a microcosm of pseudo-European...

Words, Phrases, and Misspellings We Hate

I know only one Australian. Yet on a daily basis I am bombarded with people who say, "No worries." CUT IT OUT!
  14. Baron Greystone

    The Rock of Bral

I used it, but only briefly. Had big plans, but the players didn't seem as intrigued by Spelljammer as I was. Will try again sometime, with a new group.

Words, Phrases, and Misspellings We Hate

It's. As a possessive. My blood pressure is rising just thinking about it.

    new John Carter/Barsoom RPG!

Sure, why not? I'd be happy to help.

    new John Carter/Barsoom RPG!

I don't know that keeping the core book 'focused' in the way you describe is a goal I'd agree with, per se. I think the core book should be a one-volume, stand-alone game. Supplements should be just that, supplemental. If your concept of the game is that the majority of pc's are Red Martians...

    new John Carter/Barsoom RPG!

Ah yes, I thought it went without saying, but if it's modeled on the movie rather than the novels, I'm not interested. What would I like to see? Well, I don't play much d6 so I don't know what to ask for there. I'm an old-school gamer, and prefer my rules on the light side but without gimmicks...
