On top of what @kronovan says here, there is a homebrew version that gets some play at cons. Its called Battletech Override. It starts with AS as its base, but adds back in some CBT elements. Its kinda sorta half way between them. If folks find AS too simple, but want CBT still dialed back...

There is a big difference between being able to smell that somebody somewhere is smoking, and somebody is blowing smoke directly in my face.

Id say its more than a simplification. Or, you could say there is quite a bit of light between AS and CBT. What CGL is looking to do here isnt necessary simplify CBT, but more speed up play at the table by looking hard at procedures and results.

I think you need to split the difference between a massive campaign that includes nations and agendas and… Just random pirate adventures to see how long you can last. I’m more of the former, but I’m an extensive world building all encompassing campaign weirdo compared to the average sandboxer.

I’ve long wanted to make a campaign off of Black Sails the series it’s so good. Though I’ve only done Pirates if Drinax sandbox for the Traveller system. Since jump takes about 7 days to complete its very age of sail in space.
