    How I'd fix Star Wars

I think i'd take the money and put it toward more whimsical sci-fi stories that aren't tied to existing IP, but then i like art for art's sake.

    Names of Archetypes Are Important

Personally, I find weird "evocative" names for archetypes to just muddle the issue a lot and make it difficult for someone not immersed in the world already. I can see the appeal for someone who is, though.

Player-driven campaigns and developing strong stories

So, it really depends on your players, as to how much they're willing to be self-directed. As others have said, they do generally need to get a feel for your world before they're willing to make stabs into the dark, so starting them off with more structure is always helpful. To me, the reason...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

Also, while i've been negative on a lot of the granular resource management suggestions in the thread, i want to shout out a game that does it well- Traveller, the old classic, in the mode of a tramp freighter campaign, has trade, adventure, and the economics of running such a ship intertwined-...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

I'm not sure spell components are a meaningful limitation if the game effect is 'you can just buy them in town anyway so it's just another expense'. I'm also not sure ammo limitation is actually much of a balancer in the game anyway- the class where 'ammo' is baked in is the Vancian...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

Interestingly enough, that's how ammunition is modeled in tactical wargames like Advanced Squad Leader- there's a chance any heavy weapon used in an attack 'breaks', which is considered running out of ammo as well as literal mechanical malfunction. It's more just a thing that happens than an...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

The magic thing is kinda interesting to me because i do play a system that lets you handle it in a lot of different ways. Personally, if my world has it, people who want to play magic-users want to actually cast spells and use them regularly and not just be 'a scholar who has the thaumatology...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

I don't really know if there's a particularly engaging version of 'gotcha, you forgot to say you were going to the shop to buy some mundane things that two levels from now will be a trivial expense for you'

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

Yeah, it's about as much 'metagaming' as having a player who makes a spreadsheet for every expedition from such a copper-grubbing GM to ensure that the party is taking enough provisions for a trip.

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

As a GURPS guy, i do like the way the system rewards different weapons for different kinds of use cases in terms of melee combat, so I definitely feel that. Though, in that system it's the melee combatant who has a lot of system to learn compared to the mage, who just has to learn what their...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

Yeah, I can see it- honestly, for my next campaign i am considering having players have some kind of daily expenses relating to their supplies and just applying it when they come back to towns, give me encumbrance for what your supplies are, i'll give you a number to keep you refreshed, this is...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

Yeah, I mean, that's a possible thing, but if you're going to make a spellcaster pick what spells they have ahead of time, and then they're fairly strictly limited in what they can cast based on the biome, it's going to feel like a very arbitrary restriction on top of the limitations they...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

The gathering would absolutely dominate the game. You'd have to run through the mage's scavenger hunt for components before you actually got to anything good. Or you could make it prohibitive, but then the mage feels bad because not only are they limited by, say, the Vancian system, but oh...

Sell me on (or out) Traveller

Mongoose Core 2022 has everything you need for a tramp freighter campaign. Other kinds of campaign will require some adjustment to character creation and a bit more information- Pirates of Drinax has systems to run a piracy-themed campaign, and there is a naval campaign sourcebook that in fact...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

I've played GURPS, Traveller, and several other games of that level of detail and yeah, most people bounce off the planning aspect of resource management, especially if it's say, "outfit a ship meant to explore a sparsely-explored continent". Or even "Outfit a tramp steamer for a small crew"...

D&D General Just Eat the Dang Fruit

The only thing i can think of to make accepting the offered help a thing would be for this dungeon to have several encounters of people willing to help, and kind of acculturate players to the notion that trusting can be beneficial, but this is a very early thing to do that. Other than 'make it...

Of Mooks, Plot Armor, and ttRPGs

I will say, if somebody's into the sim aspects, it's kinda weird to knock the sims they like for being imperfect to capital S Simulation, simulation's aspirational, and that's cool. I see it as a really good way to complicate things for the characters at my table, even if the only DM i ever...

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

I've found that resource management beyond the obvious individualistic stuff tends to be a very binary thing- either the group has a player who has a gift for planning and can very skillfully ensure that expeditions are fully provisioned(which for the most part eliminates the stress that...

D&D General Just Eat the Dang Fruit

This is kind of a weird situation because, i think on some level, you have to give the players the choice if you're going to make that food poisoned. If the situational detail is, suddenly in the middle of dusty dungeon people are lavishly offering you food, that would be a bit suspicious and...

D&D General Just Eat the Dang Fruit

I don't think this is a trap you can use unless you've spent time having characters eat 'on screen' in situations where it isn't poisoned- otherwise it does feel kinda arbitrary if you actually make them do it, and obviously suspicious if you don't.
