D&D 5E (2014) D&D Head Talks Future Plans (Sort Of)

Yeah, 4e picked a lane- it was about dungeon tactics and really drilling down to that experience. Unfortunately, people don't really like it when d&d picks a lane. It's a strength in a lot of other systems not to have to try to be everything to everyone, but D&D's market is definitely how it's...

Magic Item Wishlist: Yea or Nay?

I don't think DnD is really a very good system for story-based games, but regardless, I like the magic item wishlist. I think as a DM, if you're going to reward players, there's nothing worse than handing out items the player doesn't want. Part of the trust between player and DM is that the...

    Birthright??

I find that Birthright had some goofy things about it but most of all the problem was that it was a huge game bolted onto an already complicated DnD 2e system. It was a mess in that regard. The setting works pretty well for Burning Wheel, actually, moreso than most other games as you have to...

    On Sneak Attacks and Criticals

I think that most of the creatures that are immune to SA/crits should generally be immune to physical attack altogether. I wonder if cutting fire in half is really useful. And undead generally have DR, do they also need crit/SA immunity?

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

One of the problems with respect to spellcasters is the ability to rest in completely safe places, rope trick, for example. Once you have this, really, resting isn't the same kind of problem as you might think.

Am I the Only One Totally Apathetic About Power Sources?

Heh, DnD was better when 'magic' meant you could do practically anything you wanted except what the game specifically said you couldn't, while 'not magic' meant you couldn't really do anything except what the game said you could. Yeah buddy, let's have wizards be creative and able to pretty...

Divorced from reality - RPGers & Corporate America

The new moves seem really ill-conceived and not very well thought out. I mean, people try to paint this as something WoTC had to do, but could they not have seen piracy as a problem before releasing PHB2? All of their books have been heavily pirated before, it's rather strange to wait until...

What do you do without balance?

I find that the idea that DMs are meant to be the ultimate balancing factor in RPGs to be a really severe cop-out; the sort of DM fiat required that is often leveled as a criticism of 4e doesn't even come close to this. If the only balancing factor for something is the DM, why even bother...

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

Why does everyone else have to have a specified job except the full caster, who can do every job?

3E to 4E Gripes (Was: What Did You Want Fourth Edition to be Like?)

Is one of the core tenets that full casters ought to be the most powerful characters at mid to high levels? If you agree that it is a core tenet, it would have been better if 3.5 considered martial classes to be npc classes and perhaps gave casters companions from these clases ala Ars Magica...

Does 4e limit the scope of campaigns?

I think of all the criticisms of 4e, this is probably the most cogent, that it's simply not that ambitious and the skill system doesn't seem to be all that well thought out, like a half-hearted nod toward 3e players. It's not so much that there were complex non-combat systems in 3e, because...

    Roles - do they work?

I would find that the roles overlap a bit more in 4e in terms of viability as fighters are no longer forced to use either charging or full attacks to do damage, both of which are quite limited. So a fighter can both be a striker and a defender. I'd rather have not had it said what a class's...

    Roles - do they work?

Well of course Clerics and Wizards can function in multiple roles, they are the overpowered classes(along with druids) and can pretty much do anything at mid to high levels. Fighters can be built effectively(like other non-casters they are going to be relying on alternative ways to do damage...
