D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Well yeah, but the analogy breaks down- we don't even have public phones anymore!

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I wouldn't mind that either. But that's not how the game is really built. Most of the classes that get good "I don't take damage at this time" abilities are second-line or even back-line types (Rogue, arcane casters with Shield or Silvery Barbs). You have to literally spec into it as a...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

When people bring up Tolkien as an example of what fantasy they feel D&D should emulate, don't forget that at some point, even the Professor got tired of his characters having to forage for food everywhere, and just gave the party enough lembas to last the remainder of their journey!

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

It's greater than the scope of this thread, but ever since 3e, there's been this sort of class struggle with regards to the agency of players vs. the authority of the DM. You give players more agency, DM's gripe that their ability to run the game has been eroded. You give the DM more...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Ok so, let's say that, I don't know, 75% of DM's are good DM's who don't need to share authority because they're so good that their players trust them absolutely. And 75% of players are good players who can be trusted to play their characters correctly without looking for exploits and don't...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Well, when monsters can bring you from high hit points to 0 in a single turn, it's kind of necessary, or you quickly have a TPK. AC become irrelevant after awhile, I mean, when your CR 9's for example start looking like this: "Multiattack. The giant makes two attacks, using Flame Sword or...

    D&D 5E (2024) 5.5 Fighter Best Eince 2E

I was about to mention my pick for best-designed class, but then I remembered that just mentioning it's name leads to edition wars. So instead I'll just leave a picture of an iconic warrior here.

    D&D 5E (2024) 5.5 Fighter Best Eince 2E

Yeah as opposed to something that most of the time was useless. If you're bad at a saving throw, Indomitable won't help you. And it being 1/day as a high level ability? I suppose there's a school of thought that wants classes to have weak points or doesn't want to see "good at most saves" be...

Or alternately, give Clerics spells that have healing as riders. Like say, concentration 1 minute, every time the Cleric hits with a melee attack, one ally within 30' can spend a healing surge and regain hit points with a bonus equal to their PB.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

x So what's going on in D&D worlds, where all humanoid races have brains with which to overcome these things, yet somehow, many of them are human-centric?

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

So as an experiment, I introduced an item into my 5e game somewhat based on the 3.5 Belt of Healing- the main difference being that the wearer can spend an action to spend one of it's 3 charges (regained after a short rest) to spend 1, 2, or 3 healing surges for healing. To my amusement, much...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

It is interesting that you can easily dispense with any character role in a party but the healer with ease. I've seen parties with nary a spell caster wiggling their fingers, and parties lacking pure warriors. The way you tackle problems changes, but you can generally muddle along. Right up...

I guess they never heard of Grod's Law. To whit: you cannot and should not balance bad mechanics by making them annoying to use.

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season 3 Viewing (Spoilers)

No, not Aliens. The classic Die Hard scenario involves one person (perhaps with an ally) going up against a legion of foes using a combination of guerilla tactics, guile, and straight up tenacity. Ripley shows up on the planet with a gang of Space Jarheads who slowly die off, picks up a random...

    Spoilers Wednesday S2

That does seem like a plothole. Then again, witches do run in the Addams line. Even though they call Hester Frump "Grandmama" in the show, long-time Addams Family fans may know that the potion-brewing witch "Grandmama" most are familiar with is actually Gomez and Fester's mother, Eudora! So...
