AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

I loved the book (in theory). It was full of some really new, experimental things. In practice, not all of them were good- if used as written, Comeliness is a massive buff to Elven PC's and obnoxious to deal with (especially with the section about Evil aligned people liking negative...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

I always figured that canonically, the adventurers failed to bring The Miramar (an elemental powered riverboat) to it's final destination (Dungeon #43's Moving Day), so the idea was scrapped.

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season 3 Viewing (Spoilers)

Does Spock know Romulans are related to Vulcans? He seemed surprised in TOS, but I don't know if that means anything.

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season 3 Viewing (Spoilers)

Ok, wow. So much crazy in this episode. Like, just getting Vulcan physiology shouldn't suddenly switch your personality like that. Vulcans are not innately logical creatures, in fact, quite the opposite, feeling emotions more keenly than humans. Suppression of emotions, pure logic, and being...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

D&D is basically the buffet table of gaming. It's primarily a "fantasy" game, but it can be stretched to include just about any kind of fantasy, even science fantasy. Like take the Derro- directly lifted from the Deros of "The Shaver Mystery"! D&D has had sixguns, ray guns, six armed white...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

One thing I can't figure out is why 2e simplified specialization in the first place. Even as a Fighter-only benefit, it's only nice not exactly fantastic as a class feature. They should have just let anyone with the proficiency slots specialize, and retain further levels of mastery to...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

There are some things that are dangerous if they don't directly touch you, like say, flowing magma. Granted, they can also kill you without touching you, but in modern D&D, precious little kills you outright without whittling away your hit points first.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Curiously, from the very beginning, games I've played in have had Thieves/Rogues going to great lengths to not use those terms in-game, lol. When Final Fantasy 6 came out, and the game's Thief (Locke) insisted he was a "Treasure Hunter!", I was highly amused at how accurate that was.

The fact that such weapons sometimes had spikey bits were conveniently ignored.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Not necessarily. It's more about the aesthetic of neo-Victorianism and 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery, but all sorts of anachronistic and retro-futurist inventions populate the genre, from primitive versions of nuclear power to made-up discoveries like anti-gravity metal...

Yeah, that's probably why the various damage types are so vestigial in 5e. If you actually considered what being hit by things like thunder or necrotic damage would do to you, it'd be a very different experience.

It's not Steampunk until these guys are in the PHB.

It now puts into new light the 1st-level 2e Mage with 3 hp being taken out by a mere housecat! Obviously, the ability of housecats to mow down Wizards in a single combat round is a conspiracy by TSR to further a colonialist narrative! Or something.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

This reminds me of the whole "Drizzt Do'Urden is a Champion of Lolth" hypothesis*- that despite being a Chaotic Good Ranger who would very much want nothing to do with her, Drizzt is empowered by Lolth to winnow out weak Drow and foil the various schemes of her rivals. *Or has Salvatore...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

It certainly is this way now, but I'm not so sure that was the intent in 1e, at least, due to the existence of "Alignment Languages".
