Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Yeah, I imagine the Greek-American folk memory of the Ottoman period would be somewhat more interesting than the vague Hollywood version Calimshan was in the day.

The key here os that Coromyr is Greenwood's Arthuriana, based on a pop version of the French chivalry tradition, while the Moonshaes are Douglas Niles Arthuriana, based on a vague pop version of the reconstructionist takes based on the (somewhat) more "historically grounded" idea of Post-Roman...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I mean, that kind of flowed from the source material: Dark Sun was always a D&D take on Edgar Rice Burrroughs version of Mars (which was still fairly popular in the Midwest Sci-Fantasy crowd of the TSR era).

We have not seen much detail from the Gazateers, but each one has about 10 low prep Adventures with a map to create a low detail "Adventure path" if one wants, and the goals behind the choices of which locations they chose seemed to be about offering places different in key ways from the example...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

It basically was a barter system for rent: pay the landlord with labor instead of cash. A lot of it ended up being essentially "rent-controlled", which was a part of the system that landlords were eager to replace with uncontrolled cash relationships in the Early Modern era...but that is getting...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

For Calimshan, they brought in an expert, Dr. Shahreena Shahrani (who has also done work for Paizo recently), to remake it as a viable and representative Arabic Setting. Unfortunately, as someone with three translatuons of the Mabinogion on my shelf and a near-Minor in Celtic Studies, I doubt...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Well, yes, certainly, as can seen by Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale being far more "zoomed in" than the other three, although all five are getting 30-40 pages of focused gazateer in the new DM book. I have no doubt that the Tablelands could get more than 30-40 pages...but then again, maybe not...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I think slavery would work fine with modern sensibilities if the framework is similar to the 4E assumption of PCs being based out of the revolutionary state of the Free City of Tyr opposed to the villainy of the Sorcerer Kings.

Right, 5 huge regions that are subregions of a gigantic continent. Comparison: Tablelands of Athas: 100-120,000 square miles, like a large Western State of the U.S., the whole Setting in fact Calimshan: about 224,000 square miles, so approaching the size of Texas or the Ukraine The Moonshae...

I actually think if Mackenzie De Armas or Justice Armin were the product leads we could well see that. Yeah, I mean...I love Perkins work, personally, but he needs sensitivity readers real bad and was literally the product lead on every significant problematic 5E controversy...Curse of Strahd...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

It was Perkins: he wrote the art order and was the editor and product lead. I remember he did an interview in the previews era talking about how he had put a "fun reference to the Planet of the Apes" in at the last second. At that time at WotC, the editor singlehandedly decided if the manuscript...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Maybe, though Dark Sun is a far more...concise...Setting? The Tablelands are are about 100-120k square miles, so about the size of Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Italy, or Poland...like 5% of the square miles of the Sword Coast. I think you really could do Dark Sun justice in a single book format at...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Dollars to donuts we see something similar to the upcoming Forgotten Realms offering: a detailed intro Adventure (as we saw in Rusing from the Last War, Guildmasters Guide to Ravnica, Van Richten's Guide, wtc) and a bunch of low prep Adventure outlines like the DMG. Maybe a lot of them, to...

To be fair, that wasn't "WotC" in the abstract that did that, it was one actual guy who did all that...who is writing for Darrington Press now.

Wouldn't count on it not being around for longer, by the same token. Big difference between now and the prior 40 years ia the lack of market confusion: no Basic vs. Advanced, no 1E vs 2E, etc. Just...D&D.
