    Why do RPGs have rules?

If adherence to realism is an actual priority for a GM, then -PCs should go months, if not years, between getting into notable fights, unless they're in the frontlines in a war. Campaigns that aren't set during a war should probably fast forward years or decades between sessions. -Melee combat...

    Why do RPGs have rules?

That would be a pretty diabolical, calculated, and unsuccessful scheme given that the vast majority of creators in the hobby are just publishing passion projects. Forever campaigns are just an antiquated concept, and a lot of newer games are responding to the notion that not everyone wants to...

    Why do RPGs have rules?

This is not an actual problem. There'll always be some version of D&D, GURPS, etc. that can work for the small number of players who want endless campaigns. The notion that every game should be all things to all people is how we get watered-down designs that don't do anything particularly well.

Go From Superhero to Superweirdo In Apocalypse Keys

One of the defining features of PbtA games is how closely their mechanics align to their premise, and how non-portable those mechanics typically are. MotW happens to be one of the more trad PbtA games, in mechanics as well as premise and how the premise gets resolved, but that doesn't mean it's...

Go From Superhero to Superweirdo In Apocalypse Keys

Completely off the mark here. Apocalypse Keys has very different mechanics geared toward a specific kind of play (wildly powerful and tragic characters all with the potential to destroy the world), and playbooks that are basically nothing like what's in MotW. Overall MotW is very old PbtA tech...

RPG Crowdfunding News – BREAK!!, RŌNIN, TEETH, and more

I'm totally fine with WotC not pulling another Oriental Adventures. There are so many settings and ideas they can explore without doing that side quest to step on a bunch of rakes. But anyway I'd be complaining about stupid bushido BS and samurai worship in just about any game, if there was no...

RPG Crowdfunding News – BREAK!!, RŌNIN, TEETH, and more

Ronin bums me out a bit. I thought we were finally at a point where a bunch of white dudes wouldn't want to lean all the way into corny old Japanese stereotypes, but the fact that you play people who committed seppuku, and even then still just wander around buying the same nonsense Bushido...

Freebies, Sales, and Charity Bundles for April 30, 2023

Just a quick note that, rules-wise, In The Blind is mainly based on Trophy, not Blades in the Dark

D&D General How much control do DMs need?

Do you think you might be looking to be offended or attacked? Because it seems pretty obvious that that's not what was happening. You're also setting up a false dichotomy here, as though people either love the idea of a full-GM-authority referee or want nothing but flattened, zero-GM-authority...

D&D General How much control do DMs need?

I play or run in two weekly games, and while not everyone involved is a great storyteller, I'd say most are good at it. It doesn't seem all that rare to me, really—in one-shots that I've played in with people I only know through online communities, it's been roughly the same. But in the case of...

    OSR The Monster Overhaul

It’s so good it makes me want to run a fantasy game just to use it. And I really don’t like running fantasy!

Who Actually Has Time for Bloated Adventures?

The adventures (incursions) in Trophy Gold and Trophy Dark are basically presented as flowcharts, and the writing is very direct and economical. To the extent that they’re not a pleasure to read, unless you’re thinking of them purely as tools, and then they’re often fantastic.

RPG Evolution - The AI GM: Worldbuilding with Dwarf Fortress

You're the only one using that awesome term, and contributing nothing else to the discussion. Do us both a favor and don't engage with my posts.

RPG Evolution - The AI GM: Worldbuilding with Dwarf Fortress

Sure thing, I'm gatekeeping. A term that's lost all meaning, because of interactions like this.

RPG Evolution - The AI GM: Worldbuilding with Dwarf Fortress

Yes, I love to engage on a forum without talking about personal preferences or opinions. Guess I'll just shut up and drop a thumbs up on every post!

RPG Evolution - The AI GM: Worldbuilding with Dwarf Fortress

You're right, I was being a jerk with that comment. I should have said that world-building can be one of the most interesting and enjoyable aspects. But I think one of the appeals of a great published adventure or campaign is when you appreciate what the writer(s) came up with, and how their...

RPG Evolution - The AI GM: Worldbuilding with Dwarf Fortress

For sure, basically no player is going to sit down and read a GM's vast treatise about the history whatever setting they're playing in. Players want to know what they can interact with. To that end, if they don't care about the precise chronology of such and such town's involvement in one of a...

RPG Evolution - The AI GM: Worldbuilding with Dwarf Fortress

Isn't worldbuilding one of the most interesting and enjoyable aspects of GMing? I honestly don't get why someone would want to offload that creative work to algorithms.

'Everything Is a Story' Inside Wyrmwood Gaming's Narcissistic Funhouse

Very cool and effective to just let someone threadcrap a discussion into the ground while scolding others for pushing back on the threadcrapping.

'Everything Is a Story' Inside Wyrmwood Gaming's Narcissistic Funhouse

Not terribly, but for someone who's only been here for a couple weeks, you're making quite the impression. Trotting out tired anti media talking points is a great way to get people to stop talking about what's in this article, and unite in dogpiling on you for trollish behavior. Off to a great...
