    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Second attempt at lockpicking in the alley, with advantage... Grim - Lockpicking second attempt (advantage) = 14 & 22

    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Does @Nordom approve the advantage? I think Help on skills requires DM's adjudication based on the situation. Also, do you allow to try again? Neither of these are given in every single game. If retry is possible, I'll continue with lockpicking, just need to know if it's a single roll or advantage.

    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Yeah once again I am undecided... I am not a fan of changing plans, but even less of splitting the party and Kachilk'cha is already moving away. We could try another door but it feels a bit like gambling until we get a decent roll, so we might as well join her in helping the mystery NPC.

Why all the hate for Turn Undead?

I didn't even remember I started this... buy yeah it was about the WIP mechanics during 5e playtesting.

    D&D General Theros Reforged

It's a good plan, you also have a good bunch of monsters in the MM itself which are very much inspired by Greek mythology, and don't forget to take stuff straight out of Homer's Iliad and Odissey :) You can also find plenty of Greek myth information just on wikipedia!

Well let's see if it's a failure, final result is still 7 anyway so it depends on the DC.

D&D 5E (2024) Where should optional rules go and why?

In theory, I would say that player characters options can go in the PHB, and more general game options to the DMG. The alternative methods for generating ability scores are balanced against each other. Feats are balanced against ASI. Multiclassing is supposedly balanced with single-classing...

reflex save from Grim to remove the bolt -> 7 dexterity check to pick locks -> 7 Uhm... I am starting to be a bit skeptic about coyotecode dice roller.

D&D General How do you know an adventure is "good" just from reading it?

Very simple and yet complicated question... I must say that my perspective has likely changed over the course of 30 years of RPGing. Consider also that since 5e the only long-term campaign I've been running is a family game that is mostly seasonal (i.e. played a lot more during summer and winter...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D24 Spellcaster Subclasses: Thematic Unity

I think there is hardly anything more boring than symmetry.

D&D 5E (2014) Not Again! Retreater Needs to Balance 5e for 7 Players

    1. I don't think you really need to change initiative but either way will work 2. TotM is difficult with a lot of characters, and visualization can help casual players, grid or gridless as you prefer 3. That's gonna be your main concern... try to ask questions to players who aren't proactive...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Without Magic (PCs)

IIRC one Gnome and one Elf subrace have a single cantrip, Drow and Tieflings have more spells. So you still have Human, Dwarf, Wood Elf, Halfling, Rock Gnome, Half-Orc, Half-Elf and Dragonborn without magic. Or you can play Forest Gnome and High Elf as well and ignore just the bonus cantrip...

    Is "GM Agency" A Thing?

Very interesting topic... I am not sure I fully understand myself the meaning of "agency" so feel free to correct me. Also, I haven't read the full thread on player's agency as it is way too long for me to bear... Starting from the players' side, I can think of a certain difference between...

    D&D 5E (2024) Limiting Short Rests to 2x/day

The word "artificially" already tells me how wrong is this idea. As a DM, the openness of the rule gives me the freedom to balance between helping players in need and providing enough challenge. A hard limit only binds my hands.

D&D 5E (2014) "OK, I try Skill A. Now Skill B. Well, in that case, how about Skill C?"

That's exactly what I do. Their agency is much better expressed by choosing what their PCs do, not by choosing what dice to roll.

D&D 5E (2014) "OK, I try Skill A. Now Skill B. Well, in that case, how about Skill C?"

Daisy chaining knowledge checks is new to me. Normally, if there is a specific clue or key information that a PC wants to recall, and I decide to resolve with a check, it is a single Intelligence check, and one of their proficiency may apply by adding the proficiency bonus, not multiple checks...

    (IC) PLANESCAPE: Intrigue

Cursing in her mind with the most colorful words she knows in orcish language, Grim rushes towards and behind the wagon, trying her best to avoid stepping into any blackish inking puddle on the way. Pushing her back against the wagon to minimize her exposure to the volley of bolts, she squints...

    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Just to clarify, I wasn't thinking that Orris is/should be selfish :) I was actually thinking of Grim as a chaotic evil. However, even that is not so straightforward, as her backstory is complicated... hopefully we will play long enough so that everyone's details will be revealed! That said...

    (OOC) Planescape: Intrigue

Yeah, I don't know if it would be fair to change your action once you've declared it... unless everyone really thinks we should run away, and the DM allows the change. But while Grim probably would rather save herself (the PCs still haven't had time to bond to the point of dying for each other...

Which game has your favorite magic system?

I don't think I've encountered a magic system that ultimately hit all my wishes, but I can say I prefer the following: 1- self-contained spells The idea that there are specific "magic recipes" that just work in a pre-determined way does "scratch my mysterious itch" more than flexible systems...
