    "Rare" Magic Items

I use wish lists and just told my players that they can only have one rare (don't care what it is).

D&D 4E Hacking 4e - Do you hack? Why did you hack?

change: You get an action point per encounter Why: players were not using it (forgetting it, saving it for later, etc) Effect: Players started actually using them most of the time (in easier encounters they sometimes don't use them)

Saving Throw vs Death Saving Throw

Actually, it can be very useful to grant someone an extra death saving throw (note that it never occurred to me that you could do this before) if the power granting the saving throw gives you a big bonus (+5 for example). Remember that if you roll 20 or higher you get to immediately spend a...

    Shadow as a "power source"?

I thought that 4e Shadowfell was pulling stuff from the old negative energy and shadow planes? I don't know where I got this idea from so I may be wrong.

What's the most useless abilities in the game?

Personally I am going to go with whatever you chronically forget to use (does not matter if the power is actually good or not when you never use it). When DMing I forget regen on monsters on half their turns. I started putting the details in the combat tracker I am using to run games so I don't...

    Human race bonuses

In the character builder you should be able to choose which one you want on the Race tab (note if you chose to make an essential character I expect you will not have the choice).

    Mordenkainens Weapon Emporium ??

Note that actual title of the book is Mordenkainen's Magnificent Emporium.

    [Sell Me On] Nentir Vale

Do both. Use it when it works or is convenient and don't use it when you decide not to for whatever reason (even if you never actually do it, it is always an option). My first session DMing 4e was with Kobalt hall as well :-)

    Assistance with my Cleric

I find the saving throws to be very helpful (my warpriest is SUN domain). I expect this will come into play more the higher in level we get (more monsters start throwing around save ends stuff at higher levels). Making ongoing damage go away before it gets a chance to do any damage or getting...

    Assistance with my Cleric

It lets my Warpriest use one? Note it is highlighted in red for some unknown reason (the AC and reflex bonuses are still applied properly). If I unequipped the one handed weapon then the red highlighting goes away? FYI: Warpriests don't use holy symbols as far as I can tell.

    Paladin/Cleric help

Str 12 Con 16 Dex 12 Int 10 Wis 18 Cha 8 It might be worth it to pull some off the str and put it somewhere else as you are going to suck at attacks of opportunity no matter what you do (aside from spending a feat to use wis for the it - can't recall the feat name at the moment).

    Paladin/Cleric help

The healing on a warpriest is fine (not that different from a normal cleric). You could use your bonus feat (for being human) to pick up a superior weapon Waraxe for more damage (also grab axe expertise to up the to hit). Still not striker level damage but the striker is not healing the party...

Good preliminary encounters for a hydra

When looking at the stat block I was wondering where it indicated if it was an immediate reaction or what (have not worked much with the newer stat blocks yet) and did not notice the free in there. I retract my previous comment as it was incorrect. Edit: that certainly does make this a nasty...

Good preliminary encounters for a hydra

I know it gets to bite the triggering PC twice (the power says so :-) ). I was saying that I don't think the hydra gets to use the Snapping Jaws power multiple times in a round (as if it were an immediate reaction). So PC 1 ends their turn and the hydra uses Snapping Jaws and then PC 2 goes...

Good preliminary encounters for a hydra

I think that the Hydra only gets to use the triggered action once per turn (between the end of its turn and the start of its next turn). That is how immediate interrupts and reactions are handled and I think the Triggered actions section is where that stuff is now listed. I could be wrong on...

What's a good starting level for a "You are mighty heroes" campaign?

If you do start at level 11 you may want to run a few a few sessions at lower levels (3, 6, and 9 for example) to help the players get a feel for there characters. I did a reset on my campaign when we got to level 11 and all the players made new characters (they were all interested in trying out...

    Eureka....first look?

I just watched the episode this morning and the cards definitely had Dungeons & Dragons on the back. I don't have any of the other D&D board games or anything that has cards (Fortune cards, etc) so I don't know if it was from some other D&D product. Edit: Most of you seem to be making an...

I've been wondering what fourthcore was as well. That link explains it rather nicely.

Building a "Pugilist" (Monk) with the Slayer

With the low strength, he is gong to have issues hitting stuff (unless you let him use dex modifier for the to hit that is or is there something else that is causing the character to use the dex mod for the to hit modifier). Edit: Oh, I missed the Melee training feat when I first read it. Nevermind

When do you make your action choices?

Often I am in the exact same position as malraux. Occasionally I can't decide what to do until my turn comes up (need to heal the silly bloodied striker that wondered off by themselves but don't really want to get out of heal range from the defender who is also down on hit points but not...
