Rules that would be realistic, but be a real drag to have to use

Just one of the many reasons that I tend to prefer fantasy setting rpgs =p

Rules that would be realistic, but be a real drag to have to use

I have the opposite problem. I'm a former professional fighter and one of my players is currently training for his next fight. We rolled up first level characters for a new adventure and after a few combats he goes 'this sucks, I could kick my character's ass if we fought in real life' lol...

How to introduce people to RPG gaming

I love playing with beginners. Beginners are the best people to DM for because everything is novel and cool to them. You can use the most basic, overrused, cliched stuff imaginable and to them it will still be awesome and new. For a first adventure you can just go uber-cliche goblins are...

Your favourite tricks, traps, and puzzles

Yup, that was awesome and I read it. I liked in particular the riddles. But as far as the traps, puzzles, etc, went his material was mostly just generic rolled up stuff or elements that could be combined... what I was really hoping for is your favourite instances of a unique and fully fleshed...

Your favourite tricks, traps, and puzzles

Hey all! As explained before, I don't have loads of access to supplementary materials and professionally produced adventures, so I always design my own adventures (and rule system but that's beside the point). What I'm hoping for is a list of great tricks, traps, puzzles, etc, for your PCs to...

Miniatures and Madness - Legends and Lore by Mike Mearls

Well that would be a rather silly design goal considering DMs are the ones who spend all the money =p

Wandering Monsters - yea or nay?

I don't roll random wandering monsters, but I do give the party seemingly random wandering monster encounters where appropriate. When I will throw 'random' wandering monsters at a party: 1) The session will have had too much roleplaying to satisfy the more combat-oriented players/characters...

    Homebrew design challenge

Thanks for the response. My design goals is to provide the dreaded 'realistic' combat system--what this really means is I'm going for a realistic feeling, mostly by being internally consistent and doing my best to avoid rules that inevitably lead to rulings that would completely defy common...

    Homebrew design challenge

Hey all, I have pretty limited RPG experience having lived for almost a decade now in China, where both players and materials are of limited supply, so I was hoping to get a bit more perspective on some design challenges. I have a lot of the 3.5 books, and even the 3 core 4e books, but for...

Has the Vancian Magic Thread Burned Down the Forest Yet? (My Bad, People)

Agreed with all of the people above making the case that it's not so much the Vancian System that's the problem, but rather the number and power of the spells available to magic users (not just Wizards because let's face it Clerics are probably even stronger). The only main problem I have with...

    Do You Use XP

I like to award XP the way most video games do: every monster has their own exp award, and monsters killed, captured, or otherwise overcome, give the players that flat reward; divided equally among the number of PCs. Of course, monsters in different situations may be easier or harder to...

The Brutal Inquisitor (campaign brainstorming help needed)

    Nice. Fantastic villain opportunities there.

The Brutal Inquisitor (campaign brainstorming help needed)

Best thing you could do, imo, is work with the player's/character's already existing personality. For example if the player/character seems pre-disposed to disliking some race or other, that could be the race that he tried to commit genocide on before. Just generally doing your best to...

AOO's have to go, or be changed

There's another solution to this problem, that also nicely solves a great many other problems I have with the game. It's always seemed to me incredibly arbitrary to assign the 'death' point at -10. That seems to me to be some kind of artifact from second edition or something and never really...

    Name Unknown (A New PrC)

Sounds like a great class in concept. In usage, I'm afraid it might be a lot of paperwork, keeping track of how many times buddy's been hit with certain effects, etc. I'd have to see how it plays in a normal round of combat. If it's not too clunky, it'd be great.

    Barbarian vs Frenzied Berseker

In my opinion, any spell, special ability, etc, that makes a PC lose control of their character is a big mistake. When the DM starts telling players 'your character does this' instead of players telling the DM 'my character does this' it starts to seem a little masturbatory to me. Who needs...

A completely new system - Is there any interest?

genshou I admire your persistance in playing through 60 odd rounds of combat to test a theory =p. I stand corrected then, a single fighter can't eliminate that army. I wonder how a 20th level spellcaster would fare though =p. Regarding your police example, recall that I said the character has...

    Flanking

The weak flanking rules are probably mostly there to help out PCs, who are probably outnumbered in more encounters than not, but I agree that flanking is pretty weak. In my system I give a flat flanking bonus, plus reduce a targets AC for every attack against them in the same round. The first...

    New System Rules posted here

I kind of have to agree with that sentiment--this system is definately more work for the DM compared to D&D. But because it's extremenly front end, I've found combat actually flows more smoothly than D&D. Creating characters and dungeons is more work, but actually playing the game is less.

    XP/Leveling Up Variants?

As a player I actually like accumulating experience points and don't like it when DM's grossly simplify the process or eliminate it. To me exp is just as much if not moreso a desirable reward as gp/magic items. As a DM, I enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out beforehand an appropriate...
