Into The Fire!--Contrasting Analysis of 4E and 3.5E

Nice to see you around, SHARK! It has been a while. I was just looking at your other thread, and thought "I wonder what he thinks of 4E..." I suspect that it just might be to your tastes - it incorporates a lot of high level D&D concepts (and posits a more powerful starting position) than...

Running a business in the game

I think it depends on what the players and DM want the business to be in the context of the game - I had a cleric of Bes (god of luck) who opened a casino. The running of the casino was fairly simple - I had him roll a couple of skill checks a month. I didn't mess with the casino too much...

    Game Stores in Chicago?

I'll back up the idea that Games Plus is extremely easy to reach from downtown (though the train ride will be 35-40 minutes, I'm guessing). Borders at the corner of State and Randolph has some gaming stuff as well.

    I think we're done with 4E

Another tack to take on the 4E "hp grind" is that once the realization sets in, the monster(s) should realize this too, and begin trying to withdraw from combat. This has several benefits - its realistic, and it potentially changes the field of combat as the monster tries to leave.

    What's my (PC's) motivation?

Whats the motivation for the PC you're playing in games right now? In my case, its revenge - or thats the closest answer on the list.

Pramas: Does 4E have staying power?

This is what stopped me from buying Planescape back in the day, and it is a factor in my not adopting 4E yet. Not the biggest one, since I'm perfectly capable of culling the herd from a book perspective, but its a consideration.

    layoffs?

Some of this conversation has steered a little close to the "no politics" rule. So far, so good, but just keep that in mind when talking about the business aspects. That may make it tough in some ways to make your point, but them's the rules. -Kid C, EN World Mod

    layoffs?

Good luck on future endeavors, Jonathan! (and thanks for leading the bonus tools effort, as I've found those to be highly useful, and made sure to download them all so as to make sure that I'd have them going forward if Wizards ever decided to get rid of the 3.5 era stuff...)

    layoffs?

On the other hand, their expertise with that system would make them some of the best choices to design 3rd party products for it. The relative lack of 3rd party support means that if someone does it right, they stand to reap big gains.

    layoffs?

This kind of came up during the last round of big layoffs - one of the WoTC folks noted how many names were still there - big names that we might not have realized were still designing stuff for them. I think WoTC will be OK, I'm more concerned about the folks they let go. I'd love to see...

    layoffs?

On the other hand, anyone who signed on with WoTC for the 4E ramp up had to realize that fewer people were going to be needed after the launch, and planned accordingly.

    3.5 Fans - Wassup!?!?!

I'm currently running a 3.5 homebrew game that has at least a year to 18 months to go, and I'm playing in another 3.5 game. I'm not overly impressed so far with Pathfinder; while I like Paizo's work in general, it doesn't seem to me like they have fixed the things I thought needed fixing in...

    layoffs?

I don't know; there was a round of layoffs not terribly long after 3.0 came out - this was around the time Monte Cook and Sean K. Reynolds left, though I'm not sure if they were laid off per se. There were two things going then, which match very closely with what's going on right now - a new...

    Do you like buffets?

Not a fan except in particular cases - some Indian places have really good buffets. In most cases, however, the food isn't very good, and the price is higher than a single entree. I'm not that big of an eater, so volume of food is not really a selling point. Variety is, but only if its good.

    Applying 4e ideas to 3e

I've tried to do some of these. 4E crystallized some of the issues I have with 3.X, and I'm trying to apply those lessons to my 3.5 campaign. This isn't so different from on of the "off the books" things that DM's have been doing for years - giving a monster max HP. What I'm going to do is...
