Was Santa Claus the reason you started playing D&D?

Not me. I learned of D&D from a friend in 7th grade in 1979; Perry Hoffmeister. He was talking about this thing were you went into dungeons, bought gear, and fought monsters. It took a while through the conversation for me to figure out he was talking about a game, not some bizzarro...

Manual of the Planes Excerpt: Shadowfell

This would make me very happy. I'm not totally hopeful, but if they did this at some point, it would give me a serious reason to reconsider 4E.

    OGL & GSL D&D variants?

I've been thinking of going with the same basic plan as Darrins - 4E BAB, Skills, Defenses, and 3E feats. For magic, I'm going to consider everything from Pathfinder to Arcana Evolved (I haven't gotten very far in my plans yet, as I've got a 3.5 game with 5-6 more levels before it ends). I'm...

How Many Beers per Gaming Session?

I've played in games where lots of drinking took place, but mostly we're non-drinkers at game. We're (almost) all drinkers outside of game, so thats not it. From my perspective I enjoy myself more, and feel that I am contributing more to others enjoyment when I'm not drinking. D&D is one of...

    Suggestion for Frontpage

Would there be anyway to aggregate those checks? Bundle them together until they're of a size that makes sense to deal with the transfer fee? Or maybe use them to pay bills that need to be paid in the US, if any such bills exist.

    Fallout 3 - Today's the day!

I don't have my exact stats right now, but I made them pretty even across the board (4-7), then boosted Charisma to 10 via the Intense Training perk. I'm playing an evil chick, and I've got the Black Widow, as well as contract killer and cannibal. I'm level 18, and I've got Science maxed out...

Consequences of a Failed Scry/Detect Thoughts?

I believe, but can't find the rule, that if you make a saving throw you feel a tingle of something that gives you an indication.

Looking for advice on logistical aspects of running/hosting games.

Agreed - 7' by 7' is way too wide. A couple of folding tables might be the best approach, though you can get some very nice and inexpensive tables from sources like Ikea, if there's one nearby. WalMart and Target also have some OK stuff. For minis, plastic bins work well ($5-8 at Target for...

Forked Thread: What if the D&D brand had gone dark?

90% of what passes for "dark" is really just juvenile horror. Its a very difficult tone to capture on an ongoing basis, and even if you do it right, its unlikely the sales will support it. And as the others have noted, its pretty easy to add that tone to your own games without needing rules...

DM'ing a mass combat from the PC's perspective

Break it down into small tasks, each roughly equivalent to an encounter. I like ProfessorCirno's idea of random stuff happening to emulate the chaos of battle. Give the players some control over what task they need to tackle, but on the other hand, some events might be thrust upon them; the...

3.x ed.--While Playing My 15th Level Wizard Last Night, I Realized Something...

Can you post the list? It'd be interesting to see. The key thing from my point of view is that I'd want there to be spells that help investigate something, but not that hand it to you on a platter. The Object Loresight (and Object Reading which it is based off of) is awfully specific and...

    Fallout 3 - Today's the day!

I've got the PS3 game, and its locked up on me 3 or 4 times (I'm almost 18th level). I've also gotten stuck in rocks once or twice so that I couldn't move, and I've had a weird thing happen where the controller button for firing stops working, but when I come out of pip-Boy, I squeeze off one...

    Fallout 3 - Today's the day!

Deathclaws murder everything. I got myself into a fight with three at once, and the only way to pull it off was to order my companion (Clover) to stay back so she could fire from a safe position so that she didn't run in and get sliced apart. I prepped the battlefield with frag mines and used...

I'm sorry, your character idea is too awful.

I think what this thread makes clear is that its not a problem having to do with unusual characters, its more to do with unimaginative/one-note players who mistake oddness for coolness. Lots of the ideas given here have been way, way cool. I've always allowed certain players a lot more leeway...

They do seem a little pale to me - the land is pale green. Pretty, mind you, but pale.

    Fallout 3 - Today's the day!

I'm playing a female character, and trying to go evil without going "spree-kill" evil. I took the Black Widow perk and now Mr. Burke wants to marry me.

    Fallout 3 - Today's the day!

If you end up with a good alignment after a certain point, those Talon dudes will show up. I feel like going to their camp with a few-mini-nukes and saying hello...

    Fallout 3 - Today's the day!

I got that as well. The only drawback is that you have to find the little bits in order to loot them. Luckily, you can loot the entire corpse from as little as a foot. I had one raider's weapon fly about a city block.

    Fallout 3 - Today's the day!

I called the sheriff of Megaton "Calamity Jane." He didn't take too kindly to that. I've been mouthing off to most everyone so far.
