    Skill = Profession

Craft and Profession are mutually exclusive - if you make stuff you take craft (stuff) but if you don't you take profession. You shouldn't feel the need to spend points in multiple skills. The two profession skills I've seen used are Profession (Sailor) and Profession (Merchant) - allowing one...

Are some of the basic elements of medieval combat too weak in D&D?

There is a continuum between "pure game" and "simulation of reality." Finding the right setting on that slider bar is going to be different for everyone. Wanting a game to suport a little more realism does not equal wanting a precise simulation of medieval life.

Castle Shadowcrag - Anyone run it?

I think you could do it in 2 sessions if you kept things to the major events. There's enough there that you could stretch it out much further, but I think it lends itself reasonably well to shortening. I haven't run it myself, although I was all prepped to - my PC's took a different fork in...

How Might D&D Religions Differ From Real Life Religions?

I'm not so certain - if you wanted to have doubt and faith be more upfront in your campaign, you could easily have non-believers who claim that clerics are just using arcane powers, and that there is no divinity behind them. I've never really gone that way myself, but I could entertain that...

Are some of the basic elements of medieval combat too weak in D&D?

I assumed he meant he lost 12 horses personally. In any case, I think 3.X handles mounted combat fairly well. I'd like to see shields handled a little better - I like this idea: With perhaps a caveat that the shield takes damage as per sunder (maybe the PC takes half damage, representing...

Fallout 3 Has Gone Gold; System Specs

my only question is whether i get this for my PC or for my PS3. The PC has the recommended specs beat, and a 22" monitor, but my PS3 is hooked up to the 42" Plasma...

    "Lose 'em!" How?

I've been doing a lot of reading (OK, a lot of browsing of wikipedia articles) because I've got a ship captain PC and the PC's are going to be on his frigate for a good number of sessions in the next few months. You may have heard the term "weather gage." It refers to who has the advantage of...

Let The Players Manage Themselves Part 3, waitaminute...

This is complex to explain. I'm not fond of GNS categorization, as I think my game crosses too many of those lines. My games tend to be lower magic; I like the presence of magic, but I prefer that it be a minor presence with the exception of certain legendary sorts of items. In the 1E/2E...

    multiple cohorts and leadership.

I have several PC's with leadership in my game, and I have leadership in a game in which I play, and here's how the followers shake out in those cases: One PC is a Thrallherd (so she essentially has leadership) and her followers constitute a spy network that she keeps in contact with...

GMs - What kind of NPC level demographics work best?

I assume rougly 2% of all people are PC-class, the rest are NPC class. Actually, I have all this in an excel sheet that I use, so I can give the exact percentages.... I've gotten rid of the adept NPC class. The advancement rate I use is half as high for NPC classes as for PC classes. I don't...

    Monster Manual and re-used art

I was pretty surprised that they reused any art. Have any previous editions reuesed art (aside from the 3.0>3.5 of course)? I'm pretty sure the 3E art was all new.

    Building a better Hag

There are a number of more powerful hags in various sourcebooks, as well as the Night Hag (that you could reskin). There's a pretty nifty one in Frostburn, IIRC. Another idea might be to turn the appoach around entirely, and make a "Hag Template" that you could hang on an otherwise straight up...

Order of the Stick 597 is up!

No. I don't think he has. The four right words will be some form of "I have found Haley."

    thrallherd PrC.

I've got a good-aligned Thrallherd in my game. In this case, the explanation for the connection between Thrallherd and Thrall/Believers is that they are drawn to the PC in their dreams. It's a subconscious and non-overt control. The analogy to the Life of Brian is apt in this case; the PC...

    A PC who wont kill

I think it can be done - with, as Mallus points out, DM and fellow player buy-in. I've played in groups where it could work, and in groups where it wouldn't fly at all.

The Pirate King's Day of Reckoning: A GenCon 2008 Story Hour

Geez! I've actually picked up a couple readers? Okay, okay, I'll get cracking on update #2! Incidentally, for those who are reading this and who did not play in the game at GenCon, this is the write-up of a single session of Barsoomcore's Dinopirates of Ninja Island brilliance. My plan is...
