Yes. There is no point in going against the crunch king. Paizo is currently king of fantasy fluff ala AD&D 2e era. Another king of fluff would be Savage Worlds. A fixed ruleset with tons of campaign settings and genres. Perhaps taking a page from Savage Worlds model would be the way to go?

One thing why the CB and MB isn't essential to Pathfinder is that there isn't new crunch every month for the PC and monsters are not prone to be customized. Sure maybe a CR calculator but that's it.

I wish D&D was this way. Come to a FLGS and see people playing with staff always ready to demo you the game. Wizards should put out a demo kit that any walk in customers can try and then buy. D&D Encounters is good but just the beginning. You made a good point that gamer kids either go...

For 5e, the monster and npc building rules from 4e is almost perfect to me. Just tidy up some maths prob and its all good. Customizing monsters is so fun..
