    D&DN - Monte's Lejendary Adventures... (?)

Mike Mearls was not the 4E lead designer. But yeah, 4E had some of that change for change's sake too. Was it really necessary to change the magic item slots? Was it really necessary to remove the Chaotic Good and Lawful Evil alignments? Did they have to remove Gnomes from the PHB (and then...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

"You can retry martial encounters / dailys, but at a penalty" was something I wanted to add to 4E from the first time I read it. It wouldn't change too much about the game balance (you're better off using at-wills at that point), but it would add so much to believability. The other thing 4E...

Ideas and musings on my ideal magic rules system

Nerf utility magic that can replace skills: 4E Separate utility spell slots: 4E At-will combat casting: 4E (bit of a pattern here) Ok, so the party mana pool is not 4E, but I wonder how you want to explain that without completely overhauling how magic works in all D&D game worlds. But let's...

    The Utility of Class Rarity

Looking back at games I've been in, the special snowflake parties were more fun and more memorable. So that's a good thing.

    Challenging Character

There isn't really a lot you can do wrong as Paladin. Full Plate, Shield, get in their face, and if they smack an ally instead of you, hit them with radiant energy. One thing: Don't gnomes get a Charisma bonus? You would gave been better off to put your best stat into Cha and taking Cha-based...

    Something Awful leak.

I don't mind having 20 conditions IF they are all distinct and interesting. "drunk", "distracted", "confused", "frozen", "petrified", "zombified", "panicked"... Hey, a hero's life is no cakewalk. What I don't like is 20 conditions which are all just slight variations of "-1 to attack, save...

    D&DN - Monte's Lejendary Adventures... (?)

Think about it... An accomplished game designer, who played an important role in D&D history. He hates the current incarnation of the game (although he is too polite to say so openly). He now has the chance to make it right, to create a game that will surely show everyone the error of their...

    The Utility of Class Rarity

It's completely meaningless. If adventuring groups were any indication of fantasy demographics, 4 out of 5 heroes were human farmboys. Gosh, that sounds exciting. Sign me up for Crops & Commoners any time. I heard we'll rethatch the roof next session. Oh, and some girls from the neighbor village...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels and Spell Levels - what's your preference for 5E?

*shrugs* Can't really say I care either way. It's not like spell levels are that significant in-game anyway. I don't think it's that flavorful if two Wizards refer to Fireball as a 3rd-level spell among each other, so I can live without it.

    Dynamic Challenge Ratings

When I DMed 3E I felt it was a waste of time to calculate combat XP by CR. I pretended to keep track of XP in front of my players, but in the end I just told them to level up for next session when I felt it was the time. The players either didn't notice or didn't care. So yeah, if a designer...

For orcs and goblins, maybe. But how many purple worms do you fight over the lifespan of one edition? Zero, maybe one, max 3 if the DM totally has a thing for purple worms. A MM has what, 300 monsters? That's 3000 rolls... It is. It's the argument that defeats the above point. I think...

The impacts of Fantasy on (fantasy) society

I don't think fantasy worlds have to be totally internally consistent. in fact, I'm always willing to accept some whackyness when it makes the session more fun. That said, DMs definitely need all the help they can get to create a living, breathing fantasy world. World building definitely is a...

    D&D 4E 4E is the Right Direction for 5E

Agreed. Feat prereqs need to die in a hot burning fire. Either a feat is balanced, then any PC can have it, or it's not, then slapping a Str 19 prereq on it doesn't balance it either. (That 3E was worse in that regard is not really an excuse)

    Unique Monster Trait Tables

Because the guy who wrote the list wrote down the first 15-20 things that came to his mind, crossed a few out and posted the rest. As I said, it's not exhaustive or representative of all possible Orc encounters, it's just some random ideas that would make fighting an orc more memorable. You...
