Making each ability score count (Ideas)

Well, Weapon Finesse has been around since 3E came out. As for the others... of course it takes strength to wave around heavy medieval melee weapons, but to count only strength is not very simulationist in the first place. It's not "unrealistic" for one swordsman to outsmart the other with a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Slots in D&D Next

Item slots are really videogamey (OMG stop the presses D&D was videogamey before 4E and nobody told me) Obviously there are natural limits. You can't wear two full plates at once. Apart from that, item slots are an annoying mechanic that can be easily abused. The real problem in 3E was that...

D&D 5E (2014) 5E, The Edition Wars, and Shooting Ourselves in the Foot.

I think that there are ways to play the game that are Badwrongfun. These aren't tied to any edition, these are tied to DM and player attitudes, and the social contract of D&D. There are ways to behave at the table that destroy groups and drive players off the hobby, sometimes forever. I reserve...

Making each ability score count (Ideas)

It's a stated goal of 5E that ability score should matter and be useful. So how to make each stat matter in 5E? - Requirement The basic idea is that you still have one main stat that your attacks and damage key off. For your other stats, you can put them as you like. Depending on where you...

    Sorcerer - Class or Theme?

Gathering from what little info was released, it's pretty clear that if something was a class in 1/2/3/4E, it will still be a class in 5E. Not really totally extremely surprising. I know their is a small proportion of "4 class core all else optional" proponents, 20% in my rpg.net poll, but it...

D&D 4E Finally, a playtest reporting there are good things from 4e in Next!!

Thanks for the writeup. However, the key question is still unanswered: Does 5E attract hot gamer chicks? Everything else can be houseruled.

    Restrictions on races and classes.

I think farmboys should not be allowed to take Jedi classes. No good will ever come of that. Not that it matters, this shiny new battle station is now the ultimate force in the universe. And talking about Hobbits, they're short, pudgy and only care about their seven meals a day. They shouldn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) No longer interested in 5e now

In a perfect world, we'd have two editions: one for the haters, elitists, edition warriors and negative people, and one for the rest of us.

Talent Trees - The Way To Go?

I don't mind talent trees, but they need to be limited to 3 items, and each must be useful by itself. Otherwise making a character gets too fiddly. With too much crap on the way too the good stuff. You should also be able to pick the 3 steps in quick succession. I don't want to be limited at...

Pathfinder 1E What can 5e Give us that Pathfinder doesn't

Looks like among all the fiddly bits I overlooked that 3E/PF doesn't allow everyone to add their attack stat to damage. You know a newer edition did something right when you just assume it's always been that way. On a more general level, I'm just tired of the trope that fighters don't get nice...

Pathfinder 1E What can 5e Give us that Pathfinder doesn't

I made my first PF character recently. My 4E group broke down because of players moving away, new DM wants to play PF, why not. Made an elven Sorcerer. I have a bow with +5 to attack and 1d8+5 damage (point blank). Which isn't bad. However, since I'm a sorcerer, I tried to find a way to do...

    Classes, Races and Themes Headache...

I know I'm being snarky here but this thread is Whining About Games That Have Not Been Written Yet. At least playtest the damn thing before you decide that the addition of themes will Ruin D&D Forever. EDIT: Sorry, wrong trope. I was looking for Tainted By the Preview in the first one. Admin...

How is combat role different from weapon in hand?

Because it's not that easy and meta-game terms are a good thing (tm).

D&D 5E (2014) You know what? I'm frustrated at how long 5e is gonna take.

I hope they put out a playable alpha version soon. I don't mind if it's incomplete and buggy, but I don't want to read any more speculation from people who take a throwaway comment from twitter and then reconstruct a grand unified theory why WotC will leave them behind unloved and how they...

D&D 3.x 3.5E Player's Handbook II - the book that invented combat roles

Let's face it... There are a lot of players out there who like dealing damage more than anything else. There is nothing wrong with that. 4E just said hey, if dealing a lot of damage is what you like, try this and this and this class. I think the bigger problem was that many of these players...

    Metamagics

Fully agree! Simple effects like extra damage, extra range or longer duration should be possible by default, without feats. Reserve metamagic feats for the fancy stuff, like casting fireballs under water or summoning monsters wearing party hats.

    Monte Cook - Racial Importance

I want racial abilities to do three things: * Make the character feel special. Dragonborn breathing fire and Eladrin teleporting are iconic abilities that set a character apart * Support the stereotype: Iconic combinations should be natural choices in the game. Githyanki Gish, Orc Barbarian...

D&D 3.x 3.5E Player's Handbook II - the book that invented combat roles

That's not what people thought when the books came out. This kind of 3E purism is a retcon. Sure, some groups played with just the PHB because that was all they needed, but PHB II was very popular and a lot of people used it.

D&D 3.x 3.5E Player's Handbook II - the book that invented combat roles

The 3.5 Players Handbook II was published in May 2006, 2 years before 4th edition. A quick comparison between this book and 4E PHB I shows the following names in common (designers only): David Noonan, Andy Collins, Jesse Decker, Mike Mearls, Stephen Schubert, Christopher Perkins. Robert J...

    D&D 5E (2014) Another Critical Hits 5E Report

Dear Wizards, put your lawyers on a chain and lift this guy's NDA already. This puzzle game is getting ridiculous. Even Monte Cook said 90% of speculation is wrong. Only you can end this. I think people understand what "under development" means.
