    Character design help

If you make the spiked chain a light blade (with a feat?), you can use it with a Swordmage. Just for laughs. Avenger doesn't really benefit from the reach of a spiked chain, as your Oath requires you to be adjacent.

Playing a halfling, want to be more mean than normal. How do I go about this?

First of all, you're a Rogue. Other players kind of expect the Rogue to be a bastard. It just doesn't pack the right punch if the Rogue goes and stabs someone in the back. It's much more effective to play a class that doesn't immediately say "bastard" on the tin. Think Wizard. If you play a...

This is getting silly (my collection)

So that's the D&D shelf. Where is the rest of your collection?

Return old-school terminology: subclass, demihuman, etc.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how much I care about this: zero.

    D&D 5E (2014) Backwards Compatibility and 5E

Whoa, hold it. If such basic common sense becomes prevalent among D&D gamers we might as well close the forums. I for one like to watch edition wars.

    Expanding the D&D brand?

Elminster brand men's socks, Warduke laudry detergent, Lolth baby diapers... the possibilities with such a broad IP are endless.

Any news out of PAX East?

Yeah, but how long do you really need to write a playtest? For the 13th Age playtest I slapped together a conversion for a class that wasn't in there (can't say which). Took me two evenings, it got played today, and the player had a lot of fun with it. If I can write a class in 2 afternoons...

Any news out of PAX East?

Thanks for the compilation. The info so far is still way too nebulous to say anything. Where are the playtest rules??

    Rogue/ranger or rogue/warlock

You can play that way, but that's not 4E according to the Dungeon Master's Guide. The page goes on with an explanation on how the DM handles the situation of a halfling swinging across the room on a chandelier and kicking an ogre on the other side. In other words, "you can only do what's...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog: Beyond Class & Race

Sounds good - now I want to see how it looks in practice. Also, I hope class / theme / background are less split into silos as 4th edition. Meaning, I'd rather have 10 building blocks that I can drop into any class than 100 building blocks but each only works for 1 out of 10 classes. And each...

    Rogue/ranger or rogue/warlock

Breaks: Playing 4E "by the powers" is a valid way to play it, and if the DM and all players are fine with it, no problem. But not everyone likes it that way, and if you have a player at the table who wants to play in a more flexible way, the DM should support it. That's what the often cited...

    Flame's Last Flicker is out

And how did that work out for WotC? (For me, "that's what they did during the 3E->4E transition" is a counterargument)

    Rogue/ranger or rogue/warlock

Whoa, hold it. This assumes a certain 4th edition DMing style. You can play 4E that way, but that doesn't mean Rannan's DM does play that way. He might just as well have a DM who is happy to wing it, and who can come up with something on the fly. This type of DM won't have any problem with him...

    Rogue/ranger or rogue/warlock

As I said above, there is no need to worry about that. Of the choices you make at level 1, only your race, class, and ability scores are fixed (unless you ask the DM very nicely). Your powers and feats can be swapped out every time you gain a level, and your encounter and daily power are even...

    Rogue/ranger or rogue/warlock

First of all, welcome to D&D! That said, I think you are overthinking this way too much. As a new player, there is so much to learn and pick up, don't expect to soak it all in before your first session. If your fellow players are worth their salt, they will be nice to you and help you out until...

Who else wants damage tracked separately per hit ?

Think it's bad as a player? Try to keep track of every wound of every monster as DM. That said, if you're writing a new RPG and "realism" is a design goal it's something to try, especially if it's not designed to be combat heavy and getting hurt is a big deal.

    The WotC Polls

Ok, I get it, polls are serious business (tm). Now calm down.
