D&D 5E (2014) An adventure start for new PCs isn't railroading...

I've always hated "captured" scenarios. Yes, they do feel a lot more like railroading than taverns. They feel like "you were a punk and got captured" instead of "you are a starting hero starting an adventure". It just seems like a darker starting point and kind of DM heavy handed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Whack-a-mole gaming or being healed from 0 hp

I would think that the easy solution then would be to get rid of Healing Word (since it is rarely used at other times for anything else). It would be bad enough to penalize any of your players who enjoy being the one to rescue a downed ally by removing the Healing Word spell so that they can no...

D&D 5E (2014) CRs and what is going on?

Ok, I missed that. Love? Yes (mostly because they do not require attunement). Find useful and use on a daily adventuring basis? Probably not. Granted, my experience on this is only my own, but go take a look at HotDQ or other official 5E adventure modules. There are not a lot of "locked...

    D&D 5E (2014) Whack-a-mole gaming or being healed from 0 hp

We all do it. Some of us (cough, cough, looks in mirror), just do it more often than others.

    D&D 5E (2014) Whack-a-mole gaming or being healed from 0 hp

    e) Don't bother with this. PCs do not drop often enough for this to matter. And using a cure spell or a stabilization check requires resources.

Shields are not held items. They take an action to take off.

D&D 5E (2014) CRs and what is going on?

First off, that is your spin on what I wrote. The point that you might not have gotten was that there are a TON of boring magic items in the DMG. D&D has always been this way. Sure, when one really needs to go adventuring underwater, that Cap of Waterbreathing is great. But, 99% of the time...

D&D 5E (2014) CRs and what is going on?

Boring because nothing cool is being handed out. Frustrating too. Whatever adjective one would want to apply to it. Either way, that campaign would suck. IMO. I love getting magic items. And interspersed between the once in a blue moon use utility items should be occasional cool weapons, armor...

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen question. (spoilers)

No. It's the end of the module. I suspect that at most tables, that was not the end of the adventure. No doubt. Nothing wrong with letting each DM decide what to do. The problem comes in when you sideswipe a new DM (or even an experienced DM) with PC death for doing things that PCs generally...

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen question. (spoilers)

I think the exact opposite. If there is a likely scenario that could possibly result in PC death (i.e. the castle crashing), give some options as to how the DM might want to handle it. Don't expect new DMs (a portion of the HotDQ audience) to just figure it out on their own. Hoard is not a...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Sun Blade is a Lightsaber?

Except that Thundarr stole it from Lucas from 3 years earlier. Lightsaber first. Sunsword second.

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen question. (spoilers)

Yes, I am aware of that. I was merely pointing out that having the castle crash with the PCs in it and having them die is not necessarily conducive to a fun adventure. Something the module designer should have figured out on his own.

    D&D 5E (2014) The word ‘Race’

People have yet to illustrate (let alone prove) that any of the D&D material is racist. Using the word race does not do that. Where exactly does D&D promote racist views? Exactly? Which page? Someone throws a pebble into the D&D community pond and shadows appear where none existed before.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules Question: Sniping & Readied Action

The issue is that these rules are all over the map in 5E because they are not always clearly defined (as evidenced by the fact that you wrote your first post here). To me, the simple solution for this is: 1) The player declares a readied action to shoot the first goblin s/he sees. 2) Give...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules Question: Sniping & Readied Action

How are rafters different than people? If a goblin can use a fellow goblin for cover while shooting, why can't he use a rafter for cover while shooting? The concept that the goblin has to jump completely out of cover doesn't make sense. The entire point of sniping is to attack while...

    D&D 5E (2014) The word ‘Race’

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous politically correct posts that I think I have ever read. It's a fricking game. Sheesh. When will this madness end? Save these ideas for the real world where they matter. :erm:

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen question. (spoilers)

Or teach them to learn Fly and Feather Fall with future PCs. Actually, one thing you could do is have the crash result in a huge amount of damage (save for half). PCs are flung all over the place and the ones still conscious have mere moments to save their PC allies (who might be a hundred feet...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rules Question: Sniping & Readied Action

The typical ready is for the first goblin that they see. In order to be seen, the goblin must no longer be hidden. It's a DM call as to whether the goblin moving out of cover negates hidden for that split second when the goblin is going to fire his bow. If the DM rules that the goblin is still...

    D&D 5E (2014) Vampires in 5e

The extra damage of Sunbeam is not the umph I am talking about. Nor does Daylight give a saving throw. The "I cannot use Misty Escape so I die", "I cannot regenerate" is the umph I am talking about. Sunbeam is a 6th level spell. It should do more damage than a 3rd level spell. But the real...
