    D&D 5E (2014) How to Break 5E

If they have 2 or 3 difficult encounters in a day, how do they use their Hit Dice to heal without taking a short rest?

    D&D 5E (2014) Vampires in 5e

After thinking about this for a while (and actually allowing the Daylight spell to adversely affect a Vampire earlier in our current campaign), I think that I have to go with the side of the argument that states that the Daylight spell is not the equivalent of sunlight. I came to this...

    D&D 5E (2014) Vampires in 5e

Why not? It appears to be designer intent. Their wording leaves a bit to be desired (there are 2 or 3 cases of "what if" that they didn't appear to cover), but the intent seems to be fairly clear.

    D&D 5E (2014) Vampires in 5e

It's still worthless if the Vampire's main chance of escape mostly depends on initiative order (and having a crack to slide into within 40 feet, etc.). Meh. If the designers gave the monster a cool feature, let the monster use it. If the PCs want to kill it while it is in Misty Form, have them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Vampires in 5e

I have to go with the interpretation that a simple FireBolt is not going to kill a misty vampire, regardless of how the rules read. That makes Misty Escape kind of worthless. The odds of a Vampire having the next initiative after one PC takes him to zero hit points (assuming that the PC that did...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

I haven't had time to look this up (basically because our new DM has my copy of the DMG, MM, PotA, HotDQ, and RoT books), but the MM is one area where I don't really consider changing monsters to be "house rules". Monsters have always been guidelines for creatures. DMs can and should go out of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizard strategies discussed

First off, I apologize if I offended you. You seem to think your box example is perfectly reasonable. I think your box example is beyond absurd and this might be a difference between how we view illusions. Although the game is often played with tiny miniatures on a table and possibly a grid...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizard strategies discussed

It's cheesy if the Halfling is not hampered seeing the NPC and attacking the NPC. If the Halfling was just in a solid box (or even behind a small wall that he could just move around later on), nothing cheesy about it at all. The cheesy aspect of it is that of "putting small holes into it for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizard strategies discussed

I consider it a bit beyond cheesy and into the territory of munchkin-ism / rules lawyering (if one considers those to be derogatory activities). And yes, I do realize that there are some players who get a thrill out of the imaginative things that they can try to accomplish with illusions, I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizard strategies discussed

While the Help action can do this, it does have a major disadvantage that using a cantrip from 30 feet away does not (typically followed by moving even further away). The PC using the Help action is at risk for being attacked in melee if s/he rushes up into melee to do this. The Help action at...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

Sure, but spells are the bread and butter of PCs. If you have a party of just melee types, sooner or later they will get their butts handed to them just due to probability. Spells (and special abilities) are what make PCs more capable than NPCs. So an NPC that is given decent spells, by...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizard strategies discussed

Many DMs do not allow Minor Illusion (not Minor Image) to create advantage or disadvantage since the spell itself does not give this property. Advantage and disadvantage are huge boosts that shouldn't be handed out willy nilly with a cantrip. The concept of "holes that the halfling can see...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

It might not be free, but it can be an extremely optimal tactic. Auto-counterspelling a 3rd level Fireball spell that would have done 112 hit points of damage to a 5 PC party (2 saves, 3 fails on average) means 112 hit points that do not have to be healed. Even Prayer of Healing bumped into a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

Why would you think that the CR should not be slightly higher for a dragon with spells compared to one without? Do the tougher Orcs not have a higher CR than the wimpier ones? A simple Shield spell can increase the duration of a Dragon encounter by nearly a round. By definition, a challenge...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

Many monsters have very few spells since encounters are expected to only last 3 to 6 rounds, difficulty depending. Dragons, for example, get Cha number of spells (if using the spell casting variant). An encounter with a Red Dragon where the dragon only has 4 spells and Fireball is one of them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

Except that doing x to counter opponent's y is usually not guaranteed. For example, PC 1 using the Help action to give PC 2 Advantage uses up an action, but unless the difference between PC 1's DPR and PC 2's DPR is great, the overall effect is typically less. If both PC 1 and 2 have a 60%...

D&D 5E (2014) Firing ranged weapons into melee

I use a variant of the DMG rule. Creatures give a +2 cover bonus in melee. If you miss the foe because of the cover bonus (i.e. not having the cover bonus would have hit), reroll to see if you hit a creature in the line of fire. If there are multiple creatures in the line of fire, first...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

This still has the potential for an "I win" button. Player: "Chain Lightning. I put Counterspell into a 6th level slot. I win (shy of a counterspell of my counterspell)." I prefer that the player take a chance. Or possibly an Arcana roll to determine spell level. Counterspell is fairly...
