    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise underrated abilities

It's about whatever someone wants to discuss semi-related to the topic. I don't tell you how or what to post. There is nothing surprising about Portent and Hypnotic Pattern. I throw an entire round nerf on a foe when I control his saving throw. PC optimization 101.

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise underrated abilities

This can happen, though, with just 4 PCs, especially if the PCs can summon more NPC allies (like Conjure Animals), successfully cast AoE spells like Entangle, Web, or Hypnotic Pattern, etc. Granted, action economy is a lot stronger with 7 PCs than 4, but the same applies since the vast majority...

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise underrated abilities

Big bosses do not work in 5E if they are solos, regardless of which special abilities the PCs have. Our group of 7 7th level PCs took on a solo Dragon Turtle last night. We crushed it (hard encounter according to Kobold Fight Club and the PCs took something like 120 total hit points in damage...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks and high level play

Agreed. WotC never ran the numbers on that particular (subpar) ruling.

D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks and high level play

On the other hand, you could run a Warlock PC as the guy who always uses up his spells quickly. Any time he sees what he thinks is a lieutenant, he casts a spell. That way, regardless of short rests, he is always using his spells on what appears to be semi-tough foes. The REST of the party is...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

This makes little sense. If he has his spell books, he would prep an entire list ahead of time, followed by prepping his entire list after a long rest. Is it possible that the DM might throw an encounter at the PCs in the 10 or 20 or 30 minutes after the long rest? Sure. Likely? Probably not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

You got me curious, so I went to the character sheets (as the instigator of 5E in our gaming group, I got the dubious task of keeping the character sheets up to date): Bard: Ring of Frozen Moonflame (previous DM pre-DMG item), Wand of Magic Missiles, +1 studded leather Cleric: Silver Gauntlets...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

Why are you debating that notion? Why is it important? What player is going to prepare less than a full allotment without the possibility of filling in the rest of the prep slots later in the day? To me, that's a non-issue.

What numbers are you talking about?

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

While what you say is true, the game has been evolving to become better. This is a rule designed to adjust how the game is played at tables and has nothing to do with making the game better. It's just an arbitrary line drawn in the sand in an attempt to prevent a Christmas tree problem that may...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

    Still stupid metagame rules.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

While one could do this, the attunement items do appear to be the more powerful items and they also are the most prevalent. It's kind of like shooting yourself in the foot from a roleplaying and storytelling perspective (i.e. fun perspective). It's totally design intended to prevent perceived...

D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

Players do not have that right. As DM, I control when rolls are made, not the players. And typically, I have the trained PCs make knowledge checks. If the PC trained in religion does not know, the group does not know. Ditto for using the Help action for skill rolls. Sometimes I allow knowledge...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

If you reread my post, I was also talking about total magic items (i.e. 1 magic item per level), not just attunement ones. I just used the attunment DMG ratio to illustrate the point. In LMoP, there are something like 10 non-consumable items in a module that is designed to go to level 5. That's...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

It depends on whether one tries to read the phrase "prepare the list of wizard spells" to mean all spells on the list, or only new ones. I do think that the intent is clear that if the wizard loses his spell books, he cannot prep spells that he knows, just like in your example, if those prepped...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

This happens just as bad with attunement. In our campaign at 6th level, there are already "hand me down" attunement items and soon, there will be items that nobody wants because their attunement slots are full. Attunement did nothing for this issue except to propagate it in a different manner...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

I think people read too much into what is written. The implication is clear (change spells once per day after a long rest), the "WotC did not explicitly say x" crowd is trying to muddy the waters. The word "can" means that a PC can change the spells, but doesn't have to. Not "can" change some...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

Elegant how? And how do you know that it is not an arbitrary number? Why isn't 4 a good number or 1 or 8? Or were you talking about arbitrary as to what it is applied to? If so, what evidence do we have for that?

D&D 5E (2014) The Legacy of the Fighter in 5 to 10 years

Arthur? Owain Ddantgwyn? Hmmm How about wiki? Nope. Conjecture there. Scholars (and others) have put up a dozen different possible historical figures, none of which have any substantial evidence. It's unlikely that we will ever know. It's not like people did not write fiction back then (and...

New Sage Advice: Class Features, Combat, Spells, & Monsters

I don't think that the intent there is to lowball the PC, rather it is to give the DM a little flexibility. I know that with Conjure Animals, it's can be obscenely abusive if the player is allowed to bring in the perfect animal for the situation. There are at least 6 or 8 animals, though, for...
