D&D 5E (2014) A mechanical solution to the problem with rests

Ok, so players at some tables are finagling in too many rests in an adventuring day? Err, how? Is this a Warlock thing? Cause I haven't seen it at our table, even when we had 3 multiclassed Warlocks at the same time. None of our players really push for rests unless they are both out of most of...

D&D 5E (2014) A mechanical solution to the problem with rests

Yeah, I don't see the difference (I must not yet understand his system). First off, Rope Trick has not gotten used ever at our table, so I don't understand the abuse you talk of. Tiny Hut has been used maybe 3 or 4 times, but although one Wizard learned Rope Trick, it has never been used. As...

D&D 5E (2014) A mechanical solution to the problem with rests

Ok, so I have another few questions. You mentioned that if a rest gets interrupted, the recovery is not lost. So, how long does a recovery last? Is it the same amount of time like short and long rests? One PC can recover while other PCs are not recovering, correct? So, couldn't you run into a...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

Nah. One violates nothing of the sort. You are getting too caught up in the mechanics, the very thing that I am cautioning against. The designers just happened to pick Dex because historically it was used in this game system. Resisting against fire in a different game system could use...

D&D 5E (2014) A mechanical solution to the problem with rests

In the list of things that 5E designers got subpar, I tend to think that Rope Trick and Teleport are not very high on that list. I have never seen Rope Trick in play (anecdotal to be sure) and PCs do not get to level 13 in many campaigns. There are a lot more problematic spells than those two.

Which significantly devalues Rope Trick and Teleport over the core game.

D&D 5E (2014) A mechanical solution to the problem with rests

Well, if they are not using milestone, then they would have a good idea about how many encounters they have had. This would give them a fairly good rule of thumb.

D&D 5E (2014) A mechanical solution to the problem with rests

Are you saying that PCs only get the equivalent of two short rests and one long rest per level (until higher level) instead of per adventuring day? What happens if they have a few boss fights back to back? I'm not sure your analysis on XP is correct, regardless of designer intent. The PCs in...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

I guess at your table, resistance would be obvious.

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

What does high AC mean? Does it only mean hard to hit? Does it mean lacking weak spots? What do hit points reflect? If they reflect wounds, how come a Cure Light Wounds almost fully heals a PC at level one and isn't even a drop in the bucket at level 15? I just don't see where the mechanics...

    D&D 5E (2014) Boss Fight Help

I would let the spell work as written. I see Fred, Bob, and Tom. I also see Fred clone, Bob clone, and Tom clone, but I explicitly knew the difference because I walked in with Fred, Bob, and Tom. They didn't teleport to a new location when the drones changed into copies of them. The spell is...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

How exactly is "don't play the mechanics" any different than what I have been saying the entire time? Where exactly did I post 'don't tell players anything because game mechanic abstraction means there is no possible way the characters can perceive any difference in anything they do'? Yes, my...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

Precisely. Do what works for the situation, do not just blanket answer with the same (more or less) information to the players, just because the mechanic from monster #1 in encounter #1 is the same as monster #2 in encounter #2. Don't describe based on the mechanic, describe based on the...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

Part of a conversation. I do think that just blurting resistance out is playing the numbers. Especially if it should always be done which was the implication in the thread up to that point in time. Conversations evolve as more ideas and details are discussed. I stand by that first statement. It...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

Think of it more as a triangle with me being a different apex. I agree with you. If some players are not grokking what is going on, then absolutely. Simplify it and get rid of the excessive narrative. In fact, our game is often that way. There is often several things that one or more...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

You are making an assumption. That the characters should observe a given effect every single time and that is the DM's responsibility to always tell them about it. Are you claiming that the DM should always tell the players about resistance, regardless of perception, knowledge, etc.? That...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

In the "Describing the Effects of Damage" sidebar of the Players Handbook, there is verbiage that PCs should know when the creature is half damaged. I find this reasonable. There should be obvious clues that the players are making progress. The concept that hints should be given for resistance...

D&D 5E (2014) Why does WotC put obviously bad or illogical elements in their adventures?

Err, no. This has been happening since the beginning and will continue to happen until artificially intelligent computers double check the work (kind of like grammar and spell checkers do for text today). People are people. A fair number of people are not very due diligent in their job. This...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spiritual Guardians question

And this has resulted in other PCs getting smacked by the PC Cleric's Spiritual Guardians in our game. An invisible PC, or one around a corner when it is cast. Lots of fun when it happens, especially when they forget and waltz into it.
