    D&D 5E (2014) I played a game of Classic D&D.

Yeah, this is like saying that it is a decision to not have your PC jump off a 1000 foot cliff. Yeah, it is technically a decision, but it is not practically a decision. ;)

Who's obfuscating now? There is a obviously a difference between DMs and players, but stating that a DM is not a participant in a game is not accurate. Words matter. I've twice asked you to give me some terminology which would be more applicable and twice you have just complained about the...

Again, if that is the case, the DM is not really giving them a decision. He is deciding for them and couching it in a way so that they cannot make that decision (especially if they know that the DM is just going to TPK them if they make that decision). No, it is not a binary choice. But, it is...

And yet you still have not given me terminology that is applicable to that discussion. And yes, shy of a better term, metagaming (or fudging) is as good as any given that you will not give me one that gets the point across. I see a major distinction between the DM and players. I just know for...

The issue then becomes, what happens if their informed decision is to go ahead anyway? That's where the "unfairness" might come in for some players. It's not really an informed decision if the outcome is a TPK if they decide in the opposite direction that the DM expected them to. In other...

Fine. You tell me what terms I should use to get across the ideas that I already got across with examples. You seem to be nitpicking terminology, but no worries. You pick the terminology. If you say so. The player runs one character and adjusts his decisions to what else is going on around...

Agreed. 3E with the concept of feats and prestige classes and partial ability gain multiclassing opened Pandora's Box. I think a lot of that buffet stuff came from computer games like "The Bard's Tale".

I did start off that post with "I don't necessarily think that it is unfair". I wasn't trying to answer the question I quoted. I was trying to show that the term "unfair" was the wrong one to illustrate the issue. It's not unfair IMO.

Are you claiming that when a DM cuts a break to the dumb person at the table, that he isn't metagaming? Or when the DM "punishes" the wacky player? While it is true that all DMs have to metagame, the point that I was making is that the CAW DM is injecting artificial hints and clues and such...

I don't necessarily think that it is unfair, but it can be just as non-plausible as the DM who doesn't have such encounters. Let's take an example. A group of 4 4th level PCs encounter an Adult Evil Dragon in 5E. Some DMs might think that this is unfair. Some DMs might think that this is "oh...

D&D 5E (2014) FAMOUS LAST WORDS: "It wouldn't be here if we weren't supposed to fight it."

Only for some people. There are a lot of people who enjoy combat more than roleplaying.

    D&D 5E (2014) War

Make sure that you make each Wizard that the PCs see in action unique (maybe via a leaning towards specialization spells). Flesh them out. Also, why are you planning on having the attackers succeed? It sounds like they have numbers, but Wizards should be played extremely intelligent (i.e...

D&D 5E (2014) FAMOUS LAST WORDS: "It wouldn't be here if we weren't supposed to fight it."

Smiley face. Joke. Humor. You must have missed that part. ;) Personally, I find your scenario totally ok and my PC in that situation would have probably tried to convince the other PCs to grab what they could and then move out of the area where spells could be cast again. Course, with a timed...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dm advice

I would tell the DM to not be an ... There is no such thing as time stoppage in character. We have segregated inits and such to handle the game, but the two monsters that were not affected are still moving forward to attack or away to flee (or still reaching for weapons or whatever), their...

D&D 5E (2014) Survivor Worst Spells: FIND TRAPS IS THE WORST!

Find Traps 33 True Strike 39 Once a player takes True Strike, he is stuck with that cantrip forever. It slightly gimps the PC for the rest of the campaign as he cannot switch it out. He is stuck with fewer useful cantrips forever. Taking Find Traps means that he just might never cast it again.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclass House Rule

I'm not trying to downplay anything. Why don't you read this post which includes the modification in it due to the major problem Wizard 1 / Cleric X created in my original post? It answers your contentious issue...
