amazon: Confessions of a Part-time Sorceress: A Hip Girl's Guide to the D&D Game

She's obviously not following the WOTC style guide, in which a character is referred to as "Sorcerer" regardless of sex.

An End to the Classes System?

Lejendary Adventure allows one to choose skills to be part of a class-like "Order", or one can choose any skills and stay "Unordered." It's the best of both worlds.

It also sold enough that TSR continued to print it for a year (two printings!) after the 2e PHB was released. Unearthed Arcana sold so well that it was printed for two years (4-5 printings!!) after the 2e PHB was released. So yeah, the books had staying power, and there's no reason to think...

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

He has dwarves, elves, and orcs (more 'Tolkienesque' than D&D orcs, IMO) as PC races in Lejendary Adventure. . . . :)

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

Oh, I could think of a lot of people who are more philosophically incompatible than JRRT and EGG. EGG and JRRT are more alike than different IMHO. Of course, I never met the good professor and I only know Gary from on-line and e-mail, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. :)

I apologize for any misunderstanding (and you are quite right, I used the word "range" myself) -- I use saving throws to adjudicate whether a PC or NPC is in the area of effect, not whether he is in the range of a spell. I suppose I would do the same for a spell with a range that also allowed a...

I would have to look up that particular spell; is it an area-of-effect spell? I wasn't referring to ranges in my post regarding saving throws but to areas of effect. Well, I don't think it's weird. It's why I prefer saving throws to be abstract rather than linked to ability scores or...

    Not Reading Ryan Dancy

Generally I use saving throws to determine whether or not someone is in the range of a particular spell. I think using minis for abstract combat is a bit strange -- since in actual melee combat the combatants would be moving all over the place rather than staying in one particular square. As...

    Not Reading Ryan Dancy

I had to go back and read this to make sure that Mr. Dancey actually wrote this! :) But it basically confirms what I've said in the past regarding why WOTC won't reprint prior editions of D&D. They don't want to compete with themselves.

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

Not to mention EGG's insistence that female dwarves have beards.

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

Do you mean Fflewddur Fflam or one of the real bards?

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

At least as far as hobbi^H^H^H^H^H^H halflings are concerned, it was a marketing gimmick to attract readers of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to the game. But dwarves and elves are very prevalent in northern European mythology and folklore. Gary has said that he took dwarves from Norse...

    Balrog?

If memory serves, "Balor" was the name of a particular Type VI demon, and not the proper name of the type of demon.

    I've never played AD&D1

Gary and Rob also did a lot of one-on-one gaming -- Rob would DM for Mordenkainen and henchmen, Gary would DM for Robilar and henchmen. I would bet the average is about 5. But I like 4 myself. I also thought the OP's reference to "base four" was a reference to the character classes (there are...

    I've never played AD&D1

My guess is that ROF was meant to be tripled -- but only per round. The other way has ROF increasing by a factor of 30.

What version of D&D is your favourite to play (expanded poll)

ISTM that there are as many, if not more, differences between 3.0 and 3.5 as between 1e and 2e.

NOT AN EDITION WARS THREAD: 1E'ing 3E

I would consider moving to a system of rolling for initiative every round, with actions declared prior to rolling, rather than the cyclical initiative of 3e. Also consider role-playing penalties for adopting certain races or classes, and restrict multi-classing by making characters train to...

That's not a bad point. I'll alert Rob to it. But notices have been placed at popular 1E sites.
