What is wrong with race class limits?

More or less, although there are severe restrictions on dual-classing.

What is wrong with race class limits?

Limits are limits on PCs, not on NPCs and figures of old.

What is wrong with race class limits?

Then lets take out height, weight, and age restrictions, too, from the core rules, and impose them in the settings. ;) Saying that it's not in the nature of a dwarf to be a magic-user is no different than saying that a dwarf must be (for example) between 4 and 5 feet tall, or that, on average...

What is wrong with race class limits?

Nothing is wrong with racial class limitations. If one is going to remove racial class limitations, then why not remove racial size- and age limitations, too? After all, these limitations keep players from playing the characters they really want to play. Why can't I play a 7-foot tall Dwarf?

    Iconic 1E characters?

There's also lots of pre-gens in the modules with memorable names: Philotomy Jurament, Gleepwurp (some sources say "Gleedwurp" IIRC) the Eyebiter, Beek Gwenders of Croodle, etc. And I think Lord Robilar is about as iconic as it gets! Isn't there some debate over the sex of Morgan Ironwolf...

Did you use UA in your 1E games?

No, actually I think DSG and WSG are crap. Well, maybe not crap, but non-weapon proficiencies caused more problems than they solved IMO. I think UA is the best non-core (by "core" I mean only the MM, PHB, and DMG) hardback ever published for AD&D.

Did you use UA in your 1E games?

    UA is a great book . . . why wouldn't one use it in one's AD&D campaign?

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

I'm not that familiar with 3e art, since practically the only 3e product I've ever owned was the PHB. But I noticed a very clear tendency in the PHB for portraits over art depicting action. There are only 3 or 4 such portraits in the OAD&D PHB. The Frostburn picture highlighted by Merric is a...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Ah, I misunderstood your post. I thought that you were claiming that the OGL was limited to facilitating support products like modules and supplements. But I still don't understand why the OGL would allow for competing core books. The OGL business model was supposed to support sales of WOTC...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Is that really its intended purpose? If so, then why not put limitations on the OGL similar to those on the D20 STL (for example, no character creation rules)? That would permit supporting material and likely prohibit new games based on WOTC's OGC. No, I think its intended purpose is broader...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

I don't see why being told you can't do something is fundamentally less consistent with "immersion" than being told that you can. For example, I don't think disallowing halfling wizards (when in Middle-earth "there is little or no magic about them") is any more conducive to suspending belief...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

Isn't this turning in to a bit of an edition war? Isn't that materia non grata? Is the 1e revival here to stay? I certainly hope so. Pod-Caverns is a worthy and innovative adventure; so is Rob Kuntz's Cairn of the Skeleton King and Goodman Games' Iron Crypt of the Heretics. Kuntz's Tower of...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

I guess it depends on which Gygax case we're talking about. IIRC, he tried to stop the hostile takeover of TSR and lost (just or no). He then sold all of the IP he owned from works published while he worked for TSR. TSR later brought suit against GDW and Omega Helios (which I think was a...

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

I think that was concerning fanzines with a circulation of 500 or less, not slickly-produced modules by professional outfits.

Is the AD&D 1E Revival here to stay?

I must confess that although I am not a lawyer, I find the legal discussion fascinating. By the way, here is a definition of 'estoppel': http://www.lectlaw.com/def/e040.htm And here's one of 'laches': http://www.lectlaw.com/def/l056.htm Wasn't there a relevant copyright case involving Marion...

Advertorials with no game content in Dragon

I'm not a reader of The Dragon any more and I don't play video games, but I don't see what the big deal is. TD used to cover all sorts of games back in the day.

What are the differences between the Battlesystem Rules for 1e and 2e?

The 1e rules also come with counters. The 2e rules don't and assume that you have miniatures. In fact there is a whole chapter in the rules on how to paint miniatures. How lame is that?

[EDITION WARZ] Selling Out D&D's Soul?

I've been driving my Corolla for 8+ years. It's far and away the more reliable of the two cars I've owned (the other was an ancient Ford Taurus). Yes, you can drive Japanese cars into the ground, but that's because they last long enough to be driven into the ground! I would not hesitate to buy...
