What's your favorite Mass Combat system?

War Machine from the old D&D Companion Set or the Rules Cyclopedia.

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

I've never had a problem convincing my group to play something else. But then we're all friends, and I'm usually the GM. With respect to HERO and the current version of D&D, both strike me as games that are difficult to master. So I can see why a group that has been playing one or the other...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

If someone is having difficulty running a 3.5 game, then why continue to run 3.5? Regardless of "feel," that is. :p

What is the best game to capture that old 1E AD&D feel? - Please state why.

I'm not a huge fan of C&C (although my name is probably listed in the PHB along with 1000 other people's), but I don't think that it combines the bad parts of 1e and 3e. A 1e aficionado would likely identify the "bad parts" of 3e as: feats, skills, intricately balanced classes, etc., and C&C has...

    New Dwarven Favoured Class?

I chose wizard, but I think illusionist would be even better (unfortunately it wasn't an option).

What is the best game to capture that old 1E AD&D feel? - Please state why.

I agree with mythusmage. LA is the game that best recaptures that 1e "feel," even though it is a very different game. Another good option is to go with C&C but add on the secondary skills found in the Yggsburgh book, which have been republished by TLG in PDF form and can be downloaded here...

Beef - WTC price gouging Canadians

Then they would have to maintain a warehouse north of the border, or rent space in an existing warehouse, and that would add money to the price, too. :\ As far as shipping to Canada is concerned, I have not (personally) found it terribly expensive to do so, in fact not much more than say...

Beef - WTC price gouging Canadians

WOTC probably doesn't do a lot of selling to retailers. I assume that distributors do most of that. So distributors are setting the prices at which Canadian retailers are buying products. I assume that the price is the same (in American $) regardless of where the retailer is located, and the...

    What the hell is THIS?!

Worse, imagine that one is arrested for some indiscretion of that sort, the police search one's computer and find "Panty Explosion" on it! You'd be dead.

I believe it is. I ordered it late last week.

    Sell Hackmaster to me

Well, since the game is more or less unsupported at the moment, it won't be too expensive to buy all of the HackMaster core books and supplements on the market!! Glut won't be a concern at all.

Where was the term THACO first used?

A friend of mine had a PC named Thac0. Thankfully Thac0 had his skull split open by a carniverous ape and died.

    Re-use of Non-SRD OGL content?

Doesn't WOTC use other companies' open-game content (OGC) sometimes? Anyway, I don't think there's any legal risk in using something that is clearly indicated as OGC. If someone isn't borrowing from the Book of Fiends or the Book of Templates it could be that the fiend or template to be...

Cairn of the Skeleton King by Rob Kuntz - reviewed by grodog

Depends on whether you pre-ordered or ordered after it printed. If you pre-ordered then it's already been shipped and should be on its way to you. If you ordered after it was printed, then Rob will be shipping it out early next week.

    Eric Noah's Info

Exactly. WOTC is in the business of making money, not in the business of making old-school gamers unhappy. I might disagree with their decision not to support both AD&D and 3.x, but it doesn't follow that their decision is due to some personal animus against the old game. Now, WOTC could...

More info about this OSRIC thing?

They certainly did not acquire Mayfair . . . Mayfair still exists and is the U.S. publisher of (among other things) Settlers of Catan. http://www.mayfairgames.com/ Mayfair was bought by Iron Crown Enterprises in 1997. Here's a link to the TSR vs. Mayfair case But the same site also states that

    Eric Noah's Info

WOTC is in the business of making money. If they seriously believed that the additional investment required to support both "new" D&D as well as "classic" D&D could be recouped in the market, and their profits increased proportionally, they would be doing it. This is business, not personal. ;)

More info about this OSRIC thing?

Well, I submit that it would be relatively easy to create an AD&D-compatible game, except for the spells. They are the real kicker. For example, creating compatible classes is not difficult (Warrior = Fighter, Scout = Ranger, Vandal = Barbarian, Knave = Thief, etc.), but creating a whole new...

No, because whatever they might possibly gain in market share may not make up for the added cost of supporting two wholly different product lines.

More info about this OSRIC thing?

Yes. What's interesting is that if one uses the OGL then one can't use another company's trademarks, even to indicate compatibility or by way of comparison, and it's hard to see how one could make a C&C-compatible product without using at least some open-game content (but I wouldn't say it's...
