More info about this OSRIC thing?

The documents from the various cases between Mayfair Games and TSR over the "Role-Aids" can be found on the Internet. If I remember correctly, the cases can be summarized as follows: (1) Mayfair said that their Role-Aids products were compatible with AD&D (without a license). (2) TSR sued. (3)...

More info about this OSRIC thing?

No, GDW went out of business soon after for other reasons. Probably because they did not grasp the full import of the OGL at the time. The point is that there probably isn't a large enough market to make buying the license for AD&D worthwhile.

I don't think you could create a demand for something without having some sort of insight into customer wants. If the customer doesn't want something, ultimately he won't buy it. I don't believe in the "mindless automaton controlled by marketing" paradigm. I may not agree with what people want...

Either that, or they do not feel that they will be able to make a return on their investment. Maybe each of the things you described would be too expensive. Or maybe they don't want to be competing with their own products. I don't think it has anything to do with writing people off -- WOTC would...

    What use for OSRIC?

I think that's up to your GM, isn't it? I would certainly let you do it. But if you use the standard method of rolling ability scores, why oh why would you put an 18 in Charisma? ;)

    What use for OSRIC?

You will have to understand if people don't believe you are presenting them with facts. Facts are generally supported with some sort of evidence. Moreover the burden of proof is generally on the person making the extraordinary claim . . . and I think your claim that the OSRIC designers and...

Done, sir. I hope it meets with your approval. ;) Cool, and thanks. -H

    What use for OSRIC?

As you're not investing any time in OSRIC, the question of "why bother?" shouldn't really be all that important to you. Who? It's interesting that all of the actual lawyers I've seen comment on it haven't opined (informally, of course) that OSRIC violates the IP of another company. But some...

    What use for OSRIC?

They apparently only brought 60 copies to GenCon. No wonder they sold out so quickly.

    What use for OSRIC?

Well, yeah, but there's no restriction on using similar stats. That's all I meant, sorry for any confusion. Probably, but let's hope they're proactive about it! Looking at RJK's Cairn of the Skeleton King one wonders why other companies have such difficulty in getting their products edited or...

    What use for OSRIC?

Rob's CU-style stats have been used in other places (Mayfair Games Role-Aids, for example). And Rob himself is pondering using the OGL just so he can use the familiar game terms instead of euphemisms. http://p085.ezboard.com/fpiedpiperpublishingfrm3.showMessage?topicID=111.topic I quite...

    What use for OSRIC?

Ah, I meant the entire line of products compatible rather than the game engine itself. Sorry for not being more clear. "OSRIC-compatible products might well prove to be commercial failures, &c." But that possibility doesn't cause me any grief.

    What use for OSRIC?

Can be difficult because O(A)D&D doesn't have skills and feats and whatnot. Hit points (at least for characters of < 10th level) should be the same, subtract AC from 20, and then add feats and skills as you see fit. I think this very site has a number of conversions of older D&D modules to 3.x...

    Eric Noah's Info

How do you make money if you don't care about what the customer wants? Caring about customer wants and making money are not antithetical to each other, in fact they go hand in hand. I don't see how a company can be profitable without caring about customer wants. Now I might take issue with the...

    Judges Guild revival

Just so. One should have little or no difficulty in converting a C&C module to run with AD&D (1st or 2nd), HackMaster, or even B/X D&D. Subtract AC from 20 and you're good to go. I think if one adds the Castle Zagyg optinal rules (multi-classing, dual-classing, armor and weapon wear and tear...

    What use for OSRIC?

OSRIC could well wind up being a commercial failure. But so what? It's not my problem . . . and in the meantime I'll certainly take a good long look at OSRIC-compatible stuff being offered for sale. ;)

    D&D 4E Monte Cook: Rumor Control--Me and 4E

    Maybe instead of 4e, there will be infinite releases asymptotic to 4e. Of course, as the number of revisions gets smaller and smaller, so does the time in between releases: 3e - 2000 3.5e - 2004 3.75e - 2007 3.875e - 2009 3.9375e - 2010 3.96875e - ? 3.984375e - ?? etc.

    Eric Noah's Info

No, it means we have 12 months prior to a 4th Edition release. An announcement could come before then. And it's quite possible that Dungeon and Dragon could run 3e and 4e adventures and articles side-by-side.

    D&D 4E Ryan Dancey on 4E

I thought the concern was that D&D would be affected by the minis game, not the other way around. The quote seems to say a lot but it doesn't really say anything at all.

The other possibility is that some WOTC insiders refer to DDM contemptuously as "Chainmail" (not that I think it's a term of opprobrium but a WOTC insider might).
