    Mearls on Balance in D&D

B2 is probably my all-time favorite module. I can't think of one that I like better. It has just the right level of detail for a DM to flesh out and make it his own, and just the right level of combat and intrigue to get the players hooked. T1 is definitely a close runner-up, though. I'm not...

    Mearls on Balance in D&D

But that raises the question of whether person X can be called a better game designer than person Y if X's work is based on Y's previous work (even granting that the game designed by X is better than the prior game designed by Y). Btw, personally, I think Gygax's later game, Lejendary...

    Maths errors in RPGs

That shouldn't be a surprise at all. If I were in the textbook publishing business, and I wanted to publish a math (or is it "maths?" By the way, "math" is short for "mathematics" as we generally don't speak of "mathematic," certainly not as a subject of study) textbook, I think I would...

    Maths errors in RPGs

Another thing is that mechanics (rules and stat-blocks) are not the only area in which one can find mathematical errors in RPGs. For example, there are at least two math errors in Gary Gygax's Yggsburgh hardback -- for one, the triangular lot on which the Green Dragon Inn (#57) is located is too...

You may give the Vintner's Red to me, then, as I have not forgotten my Germanic heritage and so have a taste for sweet wines.

    [OSRIC] v1.01 release date

I'm afraid you've got ðem quite backwards. The thorn (Þ) is hard (or unvoiced), the eth (ð) is soft (or voiced). Why not? We distinguish between voiced an unvoiced with other letters all the time. For example: s z t d p b f v ch j k g

It's not manœuvres? Or has the 'œ' ligature been dropped? Maybe it ought to be the æþereal plane? I believe the plural of 'dwarf' is the same no matter the dialect of English. "Dwarves" is an idiosyncracy of Prof. Tolkien's that has been picked up by other authors.

Weapons doing greater damage to Large Sized Creatures...why?

'Deed I did. The elephant's superior toughness (when compared to a horse) is reflected in its lower armor class and greater number of hit points. It does not follow that it would not take more damage (but less damage relative to its total number of hit points) from a sword than a horse would.

    WOTC switch to watermarking, finally...

OK, more specifically, IIRC someone who buys a copyrighted product has the right to make a copy for archival reasons. This is definitely true for computer programs (section 117) and for other things may fall under "fair use" (section 107). Of course I am not a lawyer so take anything I write...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

The GM could force the issue by having the BBEG send out some invisible stalkers (or other lackeys) against the PCs or whomever they're protecting. . . . As the PCs get more and more famous, bad guys want to take them out. That's how to hook the PCs. :D

    The problem with D&D

Try Lejendary Adventure. Seriously, it addresses all of the issues that you raise except for #5, magic -- power disparity, class system, d20, and break points -- and does it in a (relatively) easy-to-learn and rules-light game.

    WOTC switch to watermarking, finally...

Because you neeeeeeeed it (Cf. gasoline). :p Seriously, I buy a lot of things of which I don't particularly like the price, or of which I think the price is too high. Gaming materials aren't among them, but YMMV.

    WOTC switch to watermarking, finally...

And what happens when those who don't own the book use the "yes, I do own the book" SKU? Even if one accepts the principle that customers aren't thieves (all customers?), end users make mistakes. It would be negligent of WOTC not to ensure that such mistakes aren't made.

    money value in 1st/2nd/3rd ed.

Because it is said to be "five times more [i.e., 500% more = 600% as] valuable," not "five times as valuable." As a side note, you would not believe how many mathematical errors I find in RPGs.

    WOTC switch to watermarking, finally...

Nope, IP law is concerned with distribution, not copying. The difficulty with that approach is determining who already owns a book and who doesn't. It's a great idea but there are practical difficulties in its implementation, and WOTC might not be willing to undertake it (goodness knows what...

    WOTC switch to watermarking, finally...

True dat. The books should be approx. 57% of retail (actually 57-1/7%*) in order for WOTC to make 40% of the cover price. *40% / 70% = 57.142857142857 . . . %

    New "Dead Levels"

There are tons of "dead levels" in OD&D and OAD&D, no doubt. But that gives a player the freedom to define his character by something other than his abilities and skills. For example, when one reaches name level (after which "dead levels" are pretty common, especially for fighters), one can...

Weapons doing greater damage to Large Sized Creatures...why?

No, not quite, since an elephant has more hit points to begin with. So you'll do more damage to the elephant but less damage relative to its size and power. And I don't have my books at hand but I'm fairly certain that an elephant has a lower armor class than a horse.
