Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

I prefer tables for saving throws since they are abstract rather than concrete . . . there is no reason that reflexes should be at all related to how well one avoids area of effect spells. As far as combat is concerned, whatever means less work for me as GM is what is best. ;)

What's up with the ending to Vault of the Drow?

Which unfortunately confuses the EEG with Tharizdun. :p

how do clerics/priests do magical itens?

The DMG describes a process in which a cleric hallows an item and places it on an altar to his deity. The cleric then prays for it to be enchanted, and there is a 1% chance (or something like that) per day thereafter that the deity grants his request. EGG has stated a few times that he left the...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

I like FF (I like MM2 as well); I just don't like it as much as I like UA.

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Well, UA was rushed as has been pointed out above. But even for that it is still a very good game supplement. I like it much better than Deities & Demigods, Fiend Folio, and Monster Manual II.

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

Yes, and one of the ruffians killed in the Battle of Bywater is described as "a great squint-eyed brute like a huge orc." So I think it would be possible for some orcs to just about pass for brutish humans, at least as far as their appearance is concerned (their manners are something else...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Later printings addressed this issue. My copy is still solid (unlike my copy of Oriental Adventures).

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

I understand the "alpha male" concept as it relates to animal behavior, but I was just curious as to why it was being applied to barbarians. Sure, Conan was an "alpha male" -- but he was also a king. Maybe an 8th-level barbarian who can call a horde is an "alpha male," but not a 1st-level...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Err . . . what's with all this "alpha male" stuff? I agree that a barbarian PC is hard to fit into a party. That's why I suggested an all-barbarian campaign.

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

They are said to be squint-eyed, swarthy, bow-legged, long-armed, and to walk with their hands close to the ground. What more physical description do you need? ;) My guess is that Tolkien's orcs look more or less like brutish humans with the physical attributes I've listed above. It seems...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Yes, UA explicitly makes mention of such characters (NPCs of course) IIRC.

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

There were 4-5 methods listed in the DMG, only one of which was 3d6. Another was 4d6, arrange how you like. The PHB doesn't have any methods listed.

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

I agree that a "barbarian shaman" PC class would have been useful -- especially if one wanted to run an all-barbarian campaign. A combination of barbarians, shamans, berserkers, and hunters (cited by T. Foster above) would be especially cool.

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

I strongly doubt that a paladin would be engaging in ambush tactics. And the cavalier is not asked to be suicidal, he is asked to abide by a code of honor. If he can't do it, he can't -- and he becomes a fighter, end of story. As an historical example of a cavalier, think a mediaeval crusader...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

I think you missed my point . . . if the PC can't adhere to the cavalier's code of honor, then the character should become a fighter, similar to a paladin who willingly commits an evil act. No one is being forced to "stay and fight," the PC only has to stay and fight if he wants to stay a...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

Well, I don't know any modern-day barbarians, and I'm not at all familiar with REH's Conan, but I don't think it's surprising that a character who is supposed to come from a primitive culture might distrust "civilized" magic. As the barbarian advances in levels, he becomes more "civilized." Till...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

You're probably right, Foster, though Gary's LA takes the opposite approach (one's social class is determined by one's "class" [Order]).
