D&D 5E (2014) Spells: the Good, the Bad, and the Downright Orcish Grandmother

Anything that has enough HP to last enough rounds that it does reasonable damage sucks up all the encounter XP and so will be the only thing for the party to beat on... so it won't last enough rounds for the spell to do reasonable damage. Also the spell ends if it runs past an object or steps...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

I just gave you an example where a wizard with no magic items would have 28 AC. No, it hasn't been stated. What has been stated is that giving out magic items is the default by the DMG. That if you play any published adventure, you get magic items. If you play any official event like...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

When I ran AoW for 3.5E I had well over 30 permanent character deaths. No TPKs but they came close. Some of the early encounters can be pretty rough. And some of the deaths were just mean, like when a couple of the more experienced players convinced a couple of the less experienced to go in...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

Very dramatic. However... You can do much less and invalidate the challenge of CR 20 monsters and thus break the system. It's not the only way to get high AC. There are several ways to get to this level of AC. This problem will get worse. We don't even have the full list of magic...

D&D 5E (2014) Difference between Assassinate and Death Strike class features

I wouldn't double damage on things that are "behind" a save like those poisons are. Poisons that don't have a save and just add damage to the attack I would e.g. Basilisk's bite.

D&D 5E (2014) Potions of spells which require concentration

It's also cheaper and easier to hire a bunch of low level casters to follow you along and buff you with all that gold you can't spend on magic items and have a hard time spending on poison since it's illegal.

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

You're ignoring a lot of things like superiority dice, eldritch knight spells, great weapon fighter die rerolls, MC abilities from things like barbarian or rogue etc.

D&D 5E (2014) If you aren't buying magic items, where will you spend your gold?

Sigil and Dis were popular places to head to to buy magic items in 2E. Planescape, Al-Qadim and pretty much every other setting has magic shops listed in their city source books etc. Totally SOP to buy magic items by the time 2E started. Buying magic items was pretty much commonplace in...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

It doesn't. Even the CR 17 Death Knight is only +11 to attack, so needs a 19+ rendering it free XP. Most monsters in the game need a 20. Rendering monsters unable to present a challenge to the party due to being unable to hit means bounded accuracy is completely busted. There are plenty of...

D&D 5E (2014) If you aren't buying magic items, where will you spend your gold?

Well now we know what we're spending our gold on. LOTS AND LOTS of Purple Worm Poison. Who needs wimpy magic items when that lovely stuff is available?

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

So it has bounded accuracy as long as you don't do the math and just pretend really hard. Actually, if you hand out magic items, you're doing what you're supposed to do according to the DMG, and you're doing what the official modules tell you to do, and you're doing what the official D&D...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

What is ridiculous is that you have to buy a dead tree and can't just get a far superior electronic copy.

    D&D 5E (2014) New DMG Excerpt: It's A Trap!

I don't know if it can even legitimately be called a trap if you can passively detect it. It's just terrain. You can get sneaky with various pit traps that are detectable, not detectable and fake. Having monsters who know where they all are, including the obvious ones that are fake that...

D&D 5E (2014) If you aren't buying magic items, where will you spend your gold?

Good thing they made oathbreaker paladin rules. Sometimes the buyer sets the price. *splat*

    D&D 5E (2014) New DMG Excerpt: It's A Trap!

Not a lot there and it's pretty basic, but judging by the index there are 3 more pages. Should be some good stuff in there, but I'm not throwing out my copies of Grimtooth.

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

Yes, you are correct, the Death Knight is too weak so needs to be made more powerful to provide a challenge to the party, thanks to the party having bounded accuracy breaking magic gear. However that raises the Death Knight's CR making it "too powerful" for the party or otherwise reducing the...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

I know what it means. If you're disagreeing it means you don't. +3 plate and +2 shield on a fighter = 26 AC. Assuming no other easier to get bonuses like ring of protection, shield of faith, haste etc. Now, clearly if you think needing a 20 to hit is "well within range" then you indeed...

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

Playtest did indeed have it, which is probably why we see legendary items showing up for level 7 characters in published adventures. Your comment on the difficulty of getting legendary items is equating "legendary" and "high level", and in 5E they're not.
