Player-driven campaigns and developing strong stories

I like to see the OPs vision as an acquired GM skill, which gets easier with time and with a permanent group of players that want to roleplay and engage with the game. Nowadays I don't think about it much as I often use the same method no matter the genre, and we always play traditionalist...

    On completely artificial restrictions

Let me talk about this from a subjective perspective instead. Me and my table of players are old. We enjoy traditionalist games where we focus on roleplaying, the social pillar, intrigue, conspiracies etc. But we also enjoy good old-fashioned combat encounters now and then, so that's a...

    On completely artificial restrictions

The frames and constrictions of the ruleset directly impact what story emerges from the game and how the players can interact with the world and its inhabitants. Using arbitrary rules and frames without goal or aiming for a specific result might be fun, but not the best if you want to use the...

Pathfinder 2E Paizo announced Tian Xia World Guide, Character Guide, and the Season of Ghosts adventure path.

I'm not very interested in Tian Xia as setting, but I will of course get the books!

D&D General How do you picture your D&D game in your mind?

I answered realistic since Golarion is my usual fantasy world of choice. But as politics, urban intrigue and faction scheming always tend to be present in my games, there are lots of renaissance Italy that somehow always slips in, at least in spirit.

    D&D 5E (2024) A simpler game is a better game...for us

There are many lists of (un)fun factors in 5e and I won’t repeat them, and you are of course right about WotC. In this context though the problem is longevity and evolvement. 5e has been skillful in changing the direction of the game to get hordes of new players. Now the company want at least...

    D&D 5E (2024) A simpler game is a better game...for us

As others have said, the game need fun and variation, not necessarily more complexity. Imho 5e has a lot of problems in the fun department, and One doesn't seem to change that. And I agree to the comment that D&D need to make it easier for the DM, at least with such a heavy focus on new players...

D&D General Favorite villains from your games

My latest favorite villain was known as "Heffaklumpen" (the alluded blue elephant thingy from Winnie the Poh). I made him as a not so big bad for a short drug smuggling side adventure meant as a distraction while the lowbie characters where on their way to a major city. It turned out my players...

D&D General When is the last time you played a tabletop RPG?

Last time I was a player was around 1983-84. GM for life.

D&D General When is the last time you DMed a game?

Last time I was a player was around 1983-84. I GM every Friday evening, with breaks for vacations and some holidays.

    AD&D 1E How about a little love for AD&D 1E

I have so many good memories from playing AD&D in the 80ies. It's not a game I would play today though, even though it's fun to read the old tomes sometimes, for an exercise in High Gygaxian prose.

Sell me on (or out) Traveller

Yes, and the variation I choose is Traveller Savage Worlds. Me and my players enjoy the system and have used it for different genres and power levels. And since it will be easy to adapt it to Travellers setting and premisses, I see no reason why not to use it. Fun is fun, no matter where you...

Sell me on (or out) Traveller

We all have our favorite systems :-) For me Savage Worlds have very transparent mechanics and create competent characters while keeping combat dangerous, and it's very easy to adapt to Traveller tech levels and their consequences. But then again, another positive with Traveller is that it's...

Sell me on (or out) Traveller

Little black books Traveller (and Runequest) was the first rpg I played back in the eighties, we had lots of fun. Today Mongoose 2ed have great products, I love the Third Imperium setting and the game premisses, but I don’t enjoy the mechanics. So this fall I will start up a traditional...

POLL: Is how you Roleplay influenced by your character’s mental stats?

I'm not a player, but I expect my players to use their sheet as a base for their roleplaying. If they don't, they can go do freeform stateless roleplaying at another table.

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

Almost everything related to UN grounds for discrimination, such as socioeconomic class perspectives, as well as broader moral issues gets a pass here. Killing for profit, erasure of art and history, cults of destructive capitalism and using divine power paralleling real world religions for...

How flexible are you as player and as a GM?

I'm not a player. As a GM I have my comfort zone of traditionalist systems with low-mid to high crunch and reasonable prep requirements. But within that framing, I'm extremely flexible.

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

It's simply a matter of where one want to put time and emphasis in ones game. In my group, rations and torches are implied, but having the correct seal on the forged letter of passage to present to the duergar royal majordomo definitely isn't, nor is balancing the fine line of eloquence...

The Last of Us (HBO Max)

Yes. A couple of episodes have moved me in a way usually only possible by literature or real life. Fantastic stuff.

    Is Resource Management “Fun?”

Tracking rations and torches is usually unfun. But I will start up Abomination Vaults in Pathfinder 2e as a system test, and will try to run it totally RAW including encumbrance etc, we'll se how it goes.
